Be sure to stock up on candles. I remember reading about the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the ensuing war that followed. Candles were one of the most valued commodities. Without one, you were stuck doing nothing after dark.

tell that to the looters who used guns and ammo to take what they wanted.

Oh wait, they used currency to buy the stuff they took.

I mean hell, are guns/ammo regularly used as currency in places like ukraine? 2002 afghanistan? 2006 Iraq? 2021 Argentina?

We have plenty of real world examples of a country’s government and/or economy collapsing. Were guns and ammo used as normal currency in those places?

Also, let’s be real, if we are in the end times and I have a loaded gun and no food, and you have food and no gun, It ain’t gonna be a trade.

There was an article years ago where a guy that lived in some war torn area of Europe, seems like it was in the Balkans, talked about what became currency in an apocalyptic situation. Alcohol was #1, wood to burn, socks, cigarettes and coffee were all way up there too. It was so bad that people were burning their furniture and doors for heat and to cook. Guns and ammo were talked about a little bit but rest assured, having them aren't going to make you some kind of warlord if shtf.

Ohhhh you think “used as currency” is being used literally, like “here’s 3 bullets for your chicken”

In a true economic collapse, survival type situation, I wouldn’t accept gold in a trade. What can I do with gold? You can’t eat it, it can’t keep you warm, or kill a meal for you. No healing properties. The value of gold is abstract.

Most recently, 3~4 years ago during COVID. You could trade ammo for pretty much anything in the right circles.

Guns were not traded for food during Katrina. Hence, not currency 72 hours after Katina.

Most of the looting was done by unarmed people.

They will take your guns and ammo. Nothing will be left. Like you said, you need a fortress and 100’s of military type folks.

Most of us probably live to close to cities or big towns for prepping to matter. Mass chaos would ensue, wildlife would be wiped out almost immediately, with your only hope for survival being to join a mass gang, or hide well and have a hidden stockpile of food. If you lived way out west or somewhere very desolate you may buy yourself some more time.

But, yes, I have plenty of ammo.
