I bet they had a lot of 4 foot tall 2 year olds.
Making things essentially free doesn’t attract the sort of crowd you want in your store anyway

Just was at mall of acadiana in Lafayette. Asked what the line was about and it was by far not worth standing in that line to save that money. There were people wrapped around to the door outside food court entrance. I'd guess 100-200 people in line...eff that, even worse to stand in a line that long with your kid and everyone else's kid.
That's so lame who would wait for such a stupid little... Wait they got Ninja Turtles!?

ALTERNATIVE THEORY
This was the most genius marketing ploy ever. Hear me out:
They offer an unsustainable discount to get a million customers standing outside their doors. Shut the discount down citing safety. They now KNOW these kids are going to be bugging the frick out of their parents for the bear they didn't get. BAB Corporate is going to "reach out directly as soon as possible" with some minor discount offer ($5 or $10 off) and parents will jump at it to get the little shits to shut the frick up. They have their best Quarter ever, stockholders are happy, execs take bonuses and a company paid trip to Vegas where they snort coke off hookers and laugh at the stupid people.

Seems like this is the most likely scenario, although I've seen several people saying they got $15 vouchers. But that's a lot of guaranteed sales at a price I'm sure they're still making a profit off of.

Had this sale been successful, it still would have been a failure because the concept is flawed.
Build-a-Bear was offering their entire potential sales base their product, mostly at single digit prices, and as a result their business for years would consist of people who didn't hear about the sale. In other words they were wiping out desire for their product.

That's a really good point. I haven't even thought of Build-A-Bear in like 15 years. Didn't even know they were still around. But they're in the news now.
Even the people who didn't go to the promotion might be seeing the huge lines and thinking "hmmm...I wonder if that's what I should get my niece for her birthday."

I am starting to agree. I would LOVE to see how much their web traffic increased today. Tons of people are talking about freaking Build A Bear everywhere today.

House of Burgers comes to mind. We are in the era of social media now. Why pay thousands (or hundreds of thousands) for a TV ad when you can do something stupid and have people FaceBook, Tweet, Instagram it for you for the low, low price of FREE? Hell, we are talking about it and I could give two rats asses about Build A Bear.

What really boggles my mind is that BAB is a customized product that takes time to assemble. That kind of product is NOT the kind you'd want to offer a flash sale on. It's not like people can just come in, grab one, and check out.
I'm sure BAB's CMO is having a rough day.
Naw... they are a got damn genius.
1) They got a TON of free publicity
2) They get to say "we had no idea we were going to be this popular"
3) They apparently had, in the stores, stacks and stacks and stacks of $15 off vouchers to hand out to the crowds.
The last point tells me they knew exactly what they were doing, knew what was going to happen, and were prepared for it.

How much does a typical build a bear cost? I can't imagine waiting in line that long for pretty much anything.
