Illinois in general and Chicago also have both liberalized gun laws to a great extent in the past 15 years. They still ban certain semi-automatic guns they deem to be “assault weapons” (as SCOTUS refused to hear the relevant case in 2015) but are those the types of guns normally used in Chicago drive-bys?

I've noticed there has been more mass shootings by the blacks. In fact, there was a time when you heard about a mass shooting and you just assumed it was a white, but in today's world it can be anyone.
But the media plays a big role in turn people against each other especially these cable network news stations. They all have agendas and they spin news to fit their agenda.
With all that said I think they knew (well assumed) he was a white supremacist because he had the n word written across his gun and he supposedly posted some "white supremacy" and anti-semite things online according to this article.

The numbers don’t indicate Chicago as a hotbed of gun violence (if by “hotbed”, you think it’s a top 5 city).
The Illinois gun homicide rate was 12.1 per 100,000 in 2022 (national average was 12)

(Before you’re say I’m conflating state with city statistics, note Illinois has 12 million people and 5 million live in the Chicagoland area.)
By comparison, Mississippi’s gun homicide rate was 21 per 100,000.
And the murder rate in Chicago in 2021 was less than Baton Rouge, NOLA, Birmingham, Montgomery, Memphis, and Columbia, South Carolina

I read a good bit of it. It was clearly written by someone that either completely lacked all critical thinking skills or had some sort of mental defect that made him believe all of the shitposting on the chans. It had sections for memes about each race. Seriously. Memes.
I wish the cops had smoked his stupid arse. They could have said they thought he was reaching for a weapon or something, and I don't think anyone would have questioned it.

If I was a conspiracy theorist I would say that there are people online (maybe associated with some group. Government? Another country? who knows) who come across people they see as easy to manipulate, based on what they post and they somehow motivate some of these people to do these things.
With no proof at all it would be silly to just say "yeah this is what is going on" as if its fact. But I am sure its not hard for an 18 year old in certain situations to become radicalized.
