however, in New Orleans there are some really good schools in bad areas. My wife has worked at one in Gretna and in the East. Both schools have great teachers who give a shite and the schools are well funded, but the teachers only influence the kids 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, when school is in session. The rest of that time they are at home in whatever terrible situation they were born into.
The schools are in the best shape they've been in probably 30 years, at least. The problem is, these kids go home, like to you said, to their crappy situations.
Will the 7 hours a day they get of support be enough to keep them on the right path? If it is, maybe as these kids become parents, we can turn the tide.
When I say poor quality of education, I'm referring to recent history. Education sucked, which caused a lot of kids of the 80s and 90s to turn to a life of crime, which means the dads aren't there for this generation of kids.

what tripped the degradation is my question? It would appear to me that in our quest for equality, and rightly so, some of us got left behind or is that simply a false premise on my part. What was the quality of the black family unit prior to? I assumed the quality of education to have been wanting. Have good, meaningful intentions inadvertently created an underclass and if so how is that cycle broken?
I'm not a sociologist or anything, but here is what I think.
Life in the 30s - 60s was HORRIFIC for black families compared to white families. The things they had to put up with during their interactions with white America were disgusting.
Having said that... black families had housing that many of them "owned", they had jobs, they had schools, they had a stable family unit. All of these situations were much, much lower than white families, but they had something.
Integration dumped all these black families into a world which they were not prepared for, held to standards that were far above what they were used to. Everyone knew this was an issue, but rather than slowing down and investing in education, the answer was affirmative action - just put the black person in the position, whether or not they were ready for it. That eventually failed. Black people were dumped into a "mixed" but in reality, completely white dominated economy and did not have the tools to succeed.
Faced with the ever-increasing costs of this new "mixed" economy and yet seeing themselves fall behind because they could not keep up, they turned to other ways to try to get money for their families - drugs and crime.
Eventually that leads to death and incarceration of black men, which further makes it harder for the next generation to succeed.
Add in welfare, which resulted in a population boom that could not be supported internally. Add in blacks who got themselves elected and, borrowing from third world banana republics, decided to steal from the school systems.
Going to a school like Grambling or Southern used to mean something. The people that graduated from those colleges got degrees that meant something, and they were able to go on and be productive in life. Now, graduating from those schools results in a useless degree. The CPA exam pass rates from the vast majority of the HCBU's is nothing short of stunning failure.

Harrison and Gernon said police plan to charge the suspects, when arrested, with second-degree robbery, which carries a penalty of up to 40 years in prison.
I'd bet $100 that it is pleaded down, maybe a misdemeanor when it should be attempted murder.

what you have described is my sense as well. it would be interesting to compare/contrast some of which you described with data. For example, what percentage of African-Americans were caught in this transition in a negative manner versus positive outcomes...watching tv more negative but I see and experience otherwise!

Naa this isn't a crime against some of supersaints ratchet friends where it gets pleaded away
This will make national news. They will be punished severely

a-hole tourists should've known better than to walk around after dark. They were probably buying drugs.

Second instance of a high profile attack in New Orleans on someone visiting from Boston. I mean, I know people like to hate on the Patriots and all, but jeez....

I lived in Miami Beach in the early to mid 90s when the Miami thugs were targeting tourist in rental cars.
Eventually it got national attention and tourism dropped off substantially.

Miami has been hot for years now. When did it stop tourism? I was there 3 months ago and it was vibrant and people everywhere.

I think it's been a net positive for African Americans. What happened was that those with the ability moved into the mainstream that was once denied them. Those doctors, lawyers, business owners and other professionals once provided stability for the black community. Those folks are now living on the Northshore, Metairie, the suburbs of Detroit, etc, like their white peers. What's left in the inner cities are people who can't make that step up for whatever reason. A young kid in that environment doesn't see a successful insurance agent or furniture store owner and think he could aspire to that. At best he sees a rapper or athlete as a role model. At worst he sees a criminal.

Well, what brought it back to prominence? Must've been short lived.

And mitch the bitch just got "elected" as president of the us mayors
Mr mitch the bitch, mayor of a third world country. Murder capital. Illiterate capital. Crime capital. And all around failure of a city.
it's quite a joke.
These kind of groups always elect the biggest idiots to these positions. I guess it's because they are generally idiots.
Remember when the Marc Morial got out of office, he was chosen to lead the national urban league or something like that.
When Bill Jefferson was known to be a piece of shite corrupt politician, he was still getting attention and leadership positions.
Look at the love Jesse Jackson and the race pimps get.
Dumb people do dumb things, but it's not just blacks. Edwin Edwards could run for damn near any position in the the state in a local election and probably win.

Well, what brought it back to prominence?
The local government realized that tourism brings in beaucoup dollars and required the police force to shut the crime down.
If that doesn't happen in NO (which I'm sure sees many tourist dollars) there will be financial repercussions.

Public awareness, police adapting, changing regulations (rental car license plates) among other things.
I seent it on Forensic Files.
