BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman confirms to the 9 News Investigators that a high-ranking officer has been demoted and suspended tied to an ongoing investigation into searches he conducted on the clock without a warrant.
Officer Ken Camallo has been demoted from his rank as a sergeant with the force to a corporal and also hit with a 75 day suspension tied to the internal probe into his actions. One of the warrantless searches he allegedly conducted was from January 2020. That search was caught on body camera and made public last month. It followed a strip search the officer conducted on a teen and his brother in broad daylight. Officers ended up finding a gun and drugs on the two young men during that search. Camallo and other officers later entered the young men’s home without a warrant.
While no officers have faced any punishment for the strip search, the agency did say one officer did violate departmental policy, including conduct unbecoming of an officer, violation of body cam policy and carrying out orders in warrantless searches.
Camallo is the only officer that has been punished for the 2020 incident at this time.

My only interaction recently with BRPD was when I was visiting my parents at our family home after a neighbor called the police on the Cox Communications guy
Let’s just say they’re not hiring the best candidates, so I’m not at all surprised a high ranking officer is conducting police investigations in this way.

Must be nice to get paid when you are caught with guns & drugs

Camallo was also involved in the 2020 strip search of a teenager which was caught on police body cameras. An attorney representing the teenager recently released video of the search, prompting a news conference where the department showed the full, unedited video.

The city ultimately settled a lawsuit filed by the teen's family for $35,000.

Are people assuming that warrantless searches are illegal or unconstitutional?

There was no reason to pay them
I’m curious to what led to the cop searching them

Seems like only yesterday there was a thread here about a police officer who was shot to death by a drugged out hoodrat.
The cops shouldn't have searched the home without a warrant, they should have given those kids the Vic Mackey treatment.
Instead the cop gets suspended and the animals get paid.

This feels like an odd thing to specify. Why the frick would he be performing warrantless searches off the clock? Would that be better or worse?

Should have read "fired and arrested".
Possessing a gun and drugs does not have a victim, there should be no crime.
If civilian did this they would be charged with something that would make them register as a sex offender and B&E all escalated with weapon charges and I am sure the tack on some kidnapping type charges.
WE ARE OVERPOLICED. Nothing is going to stop thugs from shooting thugs, but if we take the illegal businesses away from them by legalizing them they won't have the funds to be king thugs.

WTF? Are you assuming warrantless searches are legal?

Nothing too exciting, but now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure it was the Entergy guy. He was checking meters not in uniform and had parked his truck on a different street, so no one knew who he was or why he was snooping around people’s homes. I remember him saying he’s never coming to the neighborhood again. That apparently wasn’t the first time someone had called the police on him This was in Woodgate.

Even Alonzo Harris knew to get a warrant before he went to kill and rob Roger.
