We get a lot of complaints and questions about panhandlers. Here’s an option to consider. https://www.brproud.com/news/local-news/baton-rouge-salvation-army-addresses-panhandling-with-new-program/

Are y’all actually doing anything about them?Last I knew panhandling and vagrancy was still a crime in Baton Rouge assuming that the city abides by the LA Revised Statutes- 2011 La RS, Title 14 RS14:107 sections 1, 3, 7, 8. There’s one man who is living in Magnolia Cemetery and now the cemetery has clothing strung about and smells like urine. I’ve seen him do urination, public sex acts, and passed out in the road in the cemetery and when I called all your dispatcher said was “did he do anything to you?” So it’d be great if y’all would handle this instead of allowing these folks to disrespect family’s final resting places and a historical treasure in our city. Though I fully support this effort, I don’t think this coin system will change that.

Best comment^ Instead of dealing with panhandlers, let’s push it off to the citizens to spend MORE money. Each of the tokens is $10 by the way.

Sounds like a money grab for the Salvation Army. I bet half the panhandlers will throw them away.. Because they can't buy drugs or alcohol with a fricking wooden token.

Giving anything to panhandlers is exacerbating the problem.

BRPD can't even figure out how to get rid of panhandlers and we think these people can solve the crime problem.

If people would quit giving them anything, the problem would take care of itself. frick giving them tokens or anything else for that matter

The guy who hangs out at the Racetrac on O'Neal in the mornings is getting more and more abrasive...I heard him curse someone out for not giving him more money after getting a dollar

This is clearly a SWB idea, which will inevitably exacerbate the out of control panhandler situation in BR.

If I gave a $10 token to every panhandler I pass on my way to interstate I would be out at least $50. They are at every red light

I bet at least half of these panhandlers make more money than a lot of BRPD cops. BRPD only starts at 35,000.

This ^^

If you want them to go away then simply ignore them.

No money, no food, no drinks. And tell your wife the same because 90% of the time it's women giving the handouts.

These guys are scam artists and can easily find a job or be on SSI/food stamps to live.

They aren't starving. They're manipulating people.

They dont do a fricking thing about them in Gainesville either. They liter everywhere, aggressively beg, and harass constantly. I just tell them to frick off now as soon as they start speaking. I used to listen to their bullshite stories for a good laugh but now I cant stand it anymore. Every day.

The better solution is to learn the locations of soup kitchens and shelters, and supply those to beggars.

Be prepared, because this will get you into a shouting match. They want money, and if you don't give money they'll be aggravated.
