Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome invited civic leaders to a celebration of Exxon-Mobil in the courtyard behind City Hall Monday morning.

It was the opposite side of the building from the steps where Together Baton Rouge held a press conference last week celebrating the company's failure to secure a tax break from the East Baton Rouge School Board, then decided to pull a similar proposal from Metro Council consideration.

None of the speakers at the mayor's event mentioned the Industrial Tax Exemption Program -- or ITEP -- until prompted by the media. Rather, Broome emphasized that she would support future industrial investment in the parish. She introduced speakers from Baton Rouge Community College, the local United Way and the business community to speak about how Exxon has helped train workers, donate to charity and boost the economy.

Crazy. They think a pat on the back after a kick in the stomach will work.

That ought to fix things. They don’t care about tax breaks, they want pep rallies

East Baton Rouge Parish is frickED. I sincerely question the intelligence of anyone who is moving into EBR instead of moving out.

How long before we hear the usual suspects are seeking Exxon money for "community grants" in exchange for a ITEP support?

This city's elected officials are functionally retarded.

That's a little hyperbolic...

the governance of this city/parish would be improved with functionally retarded people running it.

This is all you need to know about where EBR is headed.

Get out while you can.

Exxon was already doing that with the amount of money they donated yearly to EBR schools and they got shite on by them, so that doesn’t even work

I’m wondering if they are sending Exxon a bill for this “attaboy”.

But some smaller grants steered to the right people now, with little oversight. Watch what happens.
