It sounds like a lot of these deaths are roll over deaths and these 50cc three wheelers and four wheelers could easily kill a kid if it rolled on top of them.

Are you referring to SxS's or regular four wheelers? Serious question

FWIW I was never a fan of three wheelers

the old ATCs were light though
you could flip it right on top of you and just push it off and over
I speak from much experience in flipping an ATC 70

Speaking from people who have mentioned kids being killed on ATVs/4 wheelers in just this thread. Seems like most of the anecdotal mentions in this thread were from them getting rolled on. Not speaking any facts here by any means, just responding to the thread. None of my friends/family ever got killed by one. We had a few hospital trips for minor stuff. My cousin did the most damage racing motocross, but she was running in a local series and taking more risks than the rest of us.

I watched my 13 year old brother die in a 4 wheeler accident when I was 8. Pretty fricking horrible.

I agree that you can't and shouldn't put your kids in bubble wrap, but I'll never buy one for my boys. My oldest is already asking for one, but I can't bring myself to even consider it.

I had my first atv at 6 years old, raced atvs till 17. Accidents can happen on a bicycle, if your kids are taught how to ride and responsible on them they are a great family activity

Hope the child will be alright.

I remember at 10 riding with my cousin on an old 110 three wheeler. flipped it in a rut and it ended up on top on me pinning me to the road. Thankfully the seat was on me and not the hot engine. Broke a wrist but overall was lucky.

Between our 110 and my uncle's 185S and Odyssey, I don't how my brother and most my cousins came out unscathed with all the shite we pulled. No helmets or other protective gear.

The worst thing that happened to me: I was in a neighbor's yard on the 110 and the neighbor's kids were giving chase on a go-kart. I stood up and looked back while still on the throttle, I then heard my name being called from my uncle then turned my head and caught a clothes line across one of my eyelids. Cut it open a little bit but I didn't have it stitched up. That, plus running into a holly tree and getting a few scrapes

Nah, I like him too much. To be honest he doesn't really understand. While I've told him that my brother died I've never went in detail. Just seems wrong to tell a kid some Grusome details.

If it makes you feel any better, I lived through riding a 4 wheeler when I was younger. No broken bones or stitches either.

I "lived through" it too, but it definitely wasn't safe for us to be on at a certain age.

Honestly, it was the adults that were 10x worse than us kids. I remember going to a friend's camp and refusing to get on it with her parents. I wouldn't even ride it with my own dad at home. Only rode it when I drove.

My dirt bike, on the other hand, I received when I was 8 years old and that was fine. Never injured myself on it, and it was small enough to not hurt me (Yamaha PW 80).

Sorry that you had to witness and go through that about your brother, man. That is sad to hear.

Nearly lost my uncle when his Odyssey landed on him and pinned his head to the ground. His mother-in-law saved him by keeping him from "swallowing on his tongue" once they got the ATV off of him.

Update from WAFB:

quote:

Officers responded to a residence on Hwy. 51 in Fluker regarding an ATV accident involving a juvenile. When deputies arrived, Acadian Ambulance Services was already on scene and helped the mother, step-father, and other family members rescue an 8-year-old girl who was submerged inside of a Polaris ATV in a pond.

The incident happened about 100 yards from where her family was standing and watching as the child and Polaris crashed into a nearby pond on the property, deputies said. Evidence reveals that the child was traveling near the south-west corner of the property where she maneuvered the ATV to the right to avoid running over a drainage ditch located near the pond, officers said. She over corrected causing the ATV to enter the pond. The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes. Within seconds the child’s mother, step-father and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.

ETA: WAFB article states that Jamie Lynn was present. I've read elsewhere that she wasn't there

Two minutes after they were called? The child must have been submerged for longer than that....that's a long time to be under water.

Awful tragedy.

The article doesn't say she was driving. Too much speculation here. A child's life is hanging in the balance, it's not the best time to question the parents judgement.

Damn, that's terrible and that's seems like a lot of time to be under in the water.

It's really sort of mindboggling the number of people there are that think those things are basically childrens toys.

I look back on my childhood and really can't believe my parents and grandparents let me just take off on these things for hours on end in the middle of nowhere, at 9-12 years old.
