I can't imagine my child under water and not being able to do anything about it even though I'm trying to do so with every second counting. I hope she makes a miraculous recovery.

I agree, solid post..
FWIW I wasn't advocating for trashing the parents or anything, because as I've said in here already, I'm an advocate for letting kids ride..

Not to be up on my high horse: but what is the point of this thread? 6 pages of people criticizing the parents for letting her on the thing, others saying "I been riding ATVs since I was 6 and I'm fine.", and others gossiping about if she is awake or not or if she will "make it". Jesus. This is a kid. The likelihood of one of the family members reading/posting here is pretty good, so let's all have some respect, say some prayers and log off.

Nope regular old seatbelt like in a car. Unless the installed an upgraded harness. Which also needs a harness bar installed across the back

More info about what happened.
According to a statement by Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards and obtained by PEOPLE, the accident occurred shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Contrary to earlier reports, the crash did not take place during a hunting trip, but on the family property, in full view of Spears and her husband, Maddie’s step-father Jamie Watson.
The child was apparently steering the vehicle to avoid running over a nearby drainage ditch. “In doing so, she overcorrected causing the ATV to enter the pond,” the report continues. “The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes.”
“Within seconds the child’s mother, step-father and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.”

My 8 year old would get owned by an ATV. She's tiny.
Most 8 year olds can't tie their shoes worth a shite and they are letting her on an ATV?
Brilliant parenting.

the cold waters.
This might be a blessing. Cold water can have a paralyzing effect on the diaphragm, especially in children, resulting in less, or even no, water inhalation.

Agree. It's negligent.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

Now that's brilliant parenting. You must of been one of those Velcro shoe kids. Pussification of America.
