Sneak peek at Baton Rouge Zoo master plans: Moving entrance, changing golf courses, more

East Baton Rouge Parish's parks and recreation system today will unveil to the public preliminary master plans and conceptual drawings for Greenwood Community Park and the Baton Rouge Zoo at two public meetings.
The design concepts also include proposals that will reduce BREC's golf offerings in the area by shuttering the larger of the two golf courses that adjoin Greenwood Park. BREC Superintendent Corey Wilson said neither golf course generates enough annual revenue to sustain themselves, making them a financial burden and costing the parks system more than $3.6 million over the past six years.

An overwhelming number of people felt the park and zoo should be better connected and the zoo's entrance moved from Thomas Road and integrated within Greenwood Park, he said.
"People had special requests for certain animal exhibits," Torre said. "And we've put together a really great entry experience in these preliminary plans where you'll come off Highway 19 and move through the rest of the park before you come to the entry of the zoo."

They are moving the entrance to Highway 19 and integrating the zoo with the park, leaving a lot of wooded area to expand in the future if necessary.

Meh. Still likely won't go to the BR zoo. . .

Good. I think they can salvage the zoo and make it an attraction again and this seems like a step in the right direction.

Moving it to a better location would be a step in the right direction.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to Baker in my entire life. If the location doesn’t change, idgaf. I’d rather drive to NOLA for Audubon.

to "change the perception of North Baton Rouge," highlighting nature and animal habitats, and adding walking trails, playground areas, water trails and aerial sports options at Greenwood Park.
All those activities and they forgot that Greenwood Park is a great place to do drug deals, break into cars, and listen to loud rap music, while intimidating the clientele

Sounds similar to Audubon Park and Zoo.

The zoo was a fun way to kill a few hours when I was a kid (1980's). The last time I went about five or six years ago, it was depressing as hell. I truly hope that they make it a fun place again.

It's not much farther of a drive for me so obviously Audobon is the answer for me.

It can take 20 min just to get from the Carrolton exit to the Audubon Gates.
I think both Zoos have their place. I'll continue to be annual members at each zoo, and look forward to the improvements they are making to the zoo in BR.
A Nola trip for us usually involves the whole day: Zoo, possibly aquarium or lunch, etc. I'm sure we will also be checking out the new children's museum once it opens.
BR entertainment options allow us to devote 3-4 hours for something, and a revamped zoo (as well as existing children's museums, etc.) makes that easy for us.
The one thing I want to see is a public carousel in BR somewhere other than the mall. My daughters love it (at the mall and at the Audubon Zoo). It would be nice if City Park had something like that where the old pool was.

It takes 40mins to get to BREC zoo and 1hr 10min to Audobon. I'm OK with an extra 30mins of driving to visit a place 100X's better.

Great move getting the entrance on 19. It will not force the visiting public to have to see the shite residential area and the current entrance. Its a very nice pc of property with mature trees and big lakes I would think done correctly it could be an asset to many.

People have a bad perception of NBR because of the people who live there, not because of the lack of new activities and amenities. I don't think fixing up the zoo will have a big impact on the area.

At the very least, it will show NBR that they need more than just investment in properties to make their neighborhood a better place.
Kudos to the Biz Report for actually including the links to the presentation documents with their press release. The Advocate sucks again.

This plan has Gravy’s blessing.

Waste of fricken money. No matter what you do. Nobody is gonna get in the interstate and drive to North Baton Rouge. Baker is getting worse and worse and now it is affecting Zachary.

Could you imagine the hype for this place if it was relocated. Hope they end up losing their zoo licenses

Probably not considering the zoo isn't in NBR
