The 40 million to greenwood is the bigger waste of money. I'm not sure what else "flashy" they could add.

They have a golf course, golf carts, disc golf course, lake with boats, small water play area, playground, party rooms, clubhouse...all of this fairly brand new. What the hell else do they need?

We'll see if the Greenwood revamp actually comes to fruition as planned. This was something they threw together recently in an attempt to appease the opposition. And I am guessing that doing the zoo relocation properly will be priority #1.

I'll say Greenwood Park is actually a pretty nice park as it is for a community park. I am not sure the expansion would be enough to make it a destination for people who aren't within 15 minutes of it, though.

The park/zoo property is technically not in Baker, but bordered on 3 sides by Baker, so it is often referred to as being in Baker.

Cortana Mall is for sale.

It's a huge piece of property on a big highway in a far better location than Baker. It didn't flood. It's cheap. They could build a zoo there and have enough space to expand for decades.

The mall property is not nearly big enough for the new zoo plans. Check out BREC's website.

The conceptual plans for the new zoo would need 100-125 acres depending on which spot they pick.

You would get no objection from Gary For moving it from NBR.

He once went on a FB rant referring to Tony's as just a modern day slave plantation

My family and I have been a couple of times. The family passes are a great value, especially for smaller kids.

With that said, I would love for it to move to the southern side of BR. As it is it's almost the same drive as to the Audobon Zoo and not nearly as nice.

BREC has not demonstrated that they can run a zoo and kept it up so why should we let them build a new one that they will neglect.

And where is the money coming from? The same people who are going to be ask to fund a new road tax, the new COA tax, the ned CATS tax, the new gas tax, the Tram tax, the tax for a new prison, the tax for a new mental health facility, and so on and on and on.

And the idea that if the zoo move it will be able to sub stain itself is ridiculous. All zoos lose money. None break even.

With all the needs in EBR it's crazy to be talking about spending 150 million or more on a zoo and a big park.

Either way, they can keep the zoo for all I care, but can south BR get the Tony's Seafood?

I'll allow it. I won't have to concealed carry for a fried turkey or a sack of crawfish anymore. I was surprised to see that last time I was there that they had expanded the Plank location. The surrounding area looks like Fallujah

I honestly know of not ONE person who has said they have been to the zoo in at least 10 years.

pretty much anyone with kids in Baton Rouge has been there. You must not know anyone with kids.

Like someone else said though, you get in the car and make sure you have absolutely everything you need, your gun and all, and you do not stop anywhere for any reason within a 15 mile radius of that zoo.

Move the zoo to ascension parish. I don't want to pay for this. i just want to go to it. I pay enough crap in this parish that the livingston/ascension parish people benefit from. Let them pay for something for a change.

You might as well not stop at any place in BR then if we're talking 15 miles.

I say move out to the land near the new casino. That would make good use of the area between the casino and the sewer treatment plant and would clear out the rift raft that is pulling down that area.

I go to the zoo.. I don't find it dilapidated. I see no need to spend $140 million for a new zoo. Build a new golf course instead.

The casino owns that property and they originally told everyone a golf course was going there.

Of course if they give BREC the property and BREC builds a zoo then I suspect they might be happy.

Perhaps this was their plan all along.

Really? That's a big zoo

Audubon zoo 58 acres

Houston Zoo (best in general area, imo and cheap admission bc of sponsorship) 55 acres

San Diego Zoo (regarded as best in nation) 100 acres

Central Park Zoo. 6 acres

National average 52 acres.

15 miles south of the zoo is about where florida Blvd is, so if you want to call north baton rouge any place in BR, then sure.

Isn't it ironic that the same people charged with taking care of the zoo and maintaining it will tell you how bad it is and it can't be fixed without a ten year program?

And no, BREC has enough golf courses, they just need better upkeep.

Then you should know that a third of the enclosures are closed, a third are okay, and a third are well below the standards of today. The bobcat one alone, with a concrete floor smaller than my living room, is downright embarrassing.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think any animals are mistreated, but this zoo is a relic of the past.

The new trend is to have a much more interactive experience. Something of which our zoo has zero. I'd love to have the opportunity to "swim with the otters," "feed the joeys," or any one of a hundred other things that all the new advanced zoos are building.

And if BREC had kept up with the times, the zoo wouldn't have been in such terrible shape.
