One side will weigh more than the other. That narrows the field by half.

again... you dont know if the odd man id heavier or lighter. you weight 3 on each side first and you can eliminate half.

You put 6 men on either side of the seesaw. Now you have it narrowed down to 6 men. You pair the 6 men into twos and weigh two of the groups. If the seesaw is level, you use your last weigh for the 2 that weren’t on the seesaw. If it tips when you do the 2nd weigh you use the 3rd weigh to determine final outcome.

You pile 3 men on each side, for a total of 6.

I’d they are equal, then the other group is the one with the different weight
Then take those who were lighter/heavier, and take an extra and sit 2 on each side.

Then take the side that is lighter/heavier and 1 on each side

You’ll have your answer

This is the only answer. The only way the 6, 3, then 2 would work is if you know the odd man out is heavier or lighter than the rest.

This is the dumbest first move you can possibly make

No new information is garnered

Other than eliminating half the field, right?

ETA: Yea I'm dumb

But you might eliminate the wrong half. As a couple have said, you don't know if the oddball is a fatty or the other 11 are.

I did it wrong in my head at first too. Then I saw what ramrod was saying.

I may have been unclear.

Divide the 12 into 4 groups of 3. Have 2 groups sit on the seesaw. If they are equal, discard them.

Your odd man will be in the remainder,

From those remaining 6, pick 4
Then have them sit on the seesaw. If it is equal, discard those and have the remainder sit on the saw.
If they are tilted then take the heavier 2 and have them sit on the saw.

That only works if you know the oddball is heavier. I assumed that too. But the riddle does not state that.

But you don't know if the person of different weight is lighter or heavier so no, no new information is derived from this act of obvious stupidity.

It doesn't eliminate half the field

It just verifies what you already know to be true and wastes a turn

Ok... so 11 people weigh exactly the same... 1 person doesn’t... it doesn’t matter whether he’s heavier or lighter... the riddle only asked “weighs differently”.

Just have the men get up on there 2 at a time. The law of averages tells us the one that weighs different will be in one of the groups that gets scaled. This way you have no doubt.
