I haven’t seen him say the boss expected a response before Monday morning.
If he checks his email Sunday morning or Monday morning makes no difference when it was sent. He simply didn’t respond at all and is now upset that his boss is asking him why. His reason is that it was sent at a strange time.
When emails are sent doesn’t matter. It’s quite simple: Just respond to them first thing Monday.

Sometimes the boss’s emails are so f’n retarded, I just ignore them.
I actually would have no idea how long it takes to defrag his computer.
And an update on the Framenstein Project requires 4 hours of reports received, input and compiled on Monday so as usual, the idiot will get it for noon on Monday. Not Sunday. At all. I’ve got church and yard work.

I'm making the argument that you shouldn't send important correspondence after business hours and especially not when you're supposed to be sleeping because there is a pretty high likelihood that they'll get overlooked.
Learn how to conditional format and color code/bold or whatever in Outlook so you can easily see all of your bosses emails. You can also create filters to see only your bosses emails, you come in to work in the morning, and check that filter first. Problem solved.

I feel that most in this thread are operating on the basis that if the expectation is for emails to be answered on the weekend that is something that needs to be clearly communicated. Nothing more, nothing less.

First off ur boss is a dickhead for emailing you 12:30 saturday morning. Why couldnt he wait till Monday morning to email you?

it would certainly be a factor...
Some of this disconnect is probably because some people are giving white collar job responses and others are doing it from the blue collar world. Nothing wrong with either, but I agree it would be different.

Well let me say that I don't mean to insinuate that not receiving an email until 12:30 AM is an excuse for waiting until Tuesday to respond, and it was honestly something that would've had to have been answered on a Saturday.
I do think it's an excuse for just not seeing it though. Not only am I off the clock, but I'm also asleep, so it's double the risk of me not seeing it. We're not getting emails on weekends that require a response in a regular basis. My fault for not having seen it, but I don't feel bad about it in the least.

This is me. I send my employees emails at odd hours, because if I don't do it then as I'm going through it, I'll forget by typical business hours.
I also tell them to ignore weekend emails from me until they are back in the office, and I will call them if I need something immediately.

How hard is it to scroll down to view the emails that came in Friday after 5 to Monday morning? What? Are you getting upwards of 2,000+ emails in that time span? If you're getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10+ emails, there is absolutely no reason to "miss" them. You apparently just suck, are not detailed oriented, and it's becoming apparent to your boss that you have taken a lackadaisical attitude.

I pretty much always glance at my work phone when I get a notification. Or if I'm out without it, when I come back I'll do a quick scan to see if something needs to be addressed.
I have my work email on my phone with the sound off but notification pop ups on, so it's easy to follow along and know when i'm needed periodically. And of course if it were super urgent, most would know that an email wouldn't suffice and a call is necessary.

What is your "industry" champ?
For the sake of conversation I'll add that I'm an engineer in the industrial field. You may consider me a "slacker", but if been fairly successful and usually am the "boss" or lead as we would say on most projects that I work on. I guess it is very industry depended but will not make work my life. I work to live and not the other way around.
