How does working hard during work hours which is what I’m paid for equate to minimal effort? You live one life and I won’t blend my work/personal time while I’m here if I don’t have to.

When I first started my job (23 straight out of college) these emails would terrify me because I wouldn't have access to our server/other info and obviously it was the weekend or midnight and I wasn't sure if he was pressing me for those things immediately. I came to realize over time that he just goes through his emails when he wants and or has a thought and is reasonable about not getting a response until its actually working time. Unless your boss is an arse you're probably fine to respond during normal working hours give or take a little bit.

Look...this thread is silly.
Either you want to be a go-getter or you don't. Either you want your name to pop into your boss's head when a promotion comes open or you don't.
Some people believe in going the extra mile...responding to emails is one way to show the boss who you are as an employee.
I can tell you that I absolutely remember each time an employee is not quick to the draw on email/assignments/etc.
There's no harm in ignoring and doing it when it's convenient for you. Just understand, though, that the "they don't pay me enough" mindset never gets ahead.
Either you want to be a go-getter or you don't. Either you want your name to pop into your boss's head when a promotion comes open or you don't.

I manage all of my company's operations across the US. Many of the emails are DL reports which I have rules to put in different folders but at some point I need to scan through those.
I receive zero SPAM.
I keep pertinent emails in my main Inbox but sometimes the less important go unanswered for days or even a week.
Emails bother me less than all the damn Lync meetings that consume huge chunks of time. I work with our Dubai office so some of my meetings start really early.

I guess it is industry dependent. I do work on the weekends, but of my own volition. I wouldn't like it being expected of me.

Then you know that going in and expect it. I might get calls at 1 AM or emails at 1 AM from someone in China wanting me to verify a measurement on something. If I don't get up and verify it a day will be lost on producing that item.
Maybe this guys job didn't tell him going in that he might have to do that. Has he said what he does for a living that would require him to answer an email at 12:30?

no one is saying he had to answer the email at 1230 am......It's Tuesday and his boss is asking why hasn't he answered it by now.......his excuse is because it was sent at 1230 am on a Saturday night

Has anyone mentioned that it's also not too much for your boss or any boss to acknowledge it's late on the weekend and apologize for it, just let me know whatever they need to know on Monday am.

That's so superficial though. If your way of standing out is being prompt on emails then maybe you're not qualified for your job. And if you think a good criteria for promotion is weekend email responsiveness then maybe you're not qualified to be making those decisions.

If my boss sent me an email on Saturday, it surely wouldn't be still sitting in my inbox without a reply on Tuesday.
