This is different across industries. If it's truly that important, you should text or call; however, this should not be commonplace for every weekend. Again, different industries have different needs and an employee should know what they are getting into, but you can't expect people to give up every weekend to respond to your needs unless you pay them well enough for it and it's understood ahead of time. Otherwise, you're just a dick.

If they are working on commission you're damn right I expect them to not miss any calls or emails on the weekend or holidays.

Well I do receive emails after hours but it's not usually the kind that requires an immediate response.
It's nothing malicious if I don't respond, but by all means call me if you really need me. I'd rather be called at 12:40 AM then be called out for missing an email that my try hard boss sent at 12:30 AM on a Saturday mornong.
I just didn't think I had any emails come through that I hadn't already seen.

Carry on then, that makes more sense. And if it's understood up front when they take the job, then it's on them. Commission based jobs are different so I can see why this makes sense.

you familiar with new wage and hour laws? I'd hope so if you are a manager. Hint: it doesn't make a frick of a difference if you are salaried or not.

I understand the sentiment, particularly for commissioned employees. But you damn sure shouldn't require it of any of your employees unless you enjoy fighting lawsuits.

I don't think you're grasping that no matter when it was sent, it should appear unread when you walk in on Monday morning and there's no reason that should be missed. Do you not have unread emails on Monday mornings?

Not true in a lot of cases. Wage and hour suits have been most prevalent in the retail industry as well as convenience stores. Assistant managers make 30-40k a year, get a company phone, work insane hours and are expected to ask high when told to jump.
it's also widely expected that the 47,456 or whatever it is exactly is going to continue to increase.

The people with blue collar jobs are often the most apt to live to work because with some exceptions they aren't making enough money to do much else.

The disconnect isn't white vs blue collar. I don't know many blue collar guys that need company laptops and phones to do their jobs. It's your goofy, megalomaniacal assertion that email response time is some kind of KPI.
