Picking a free pup that needs a home this weekend...what should I expect?
Chewing an issue, excercise needs, shedding etc? Haven’t researched much of anything since this was just sprung on us.

My wife had one growing up. It used to herd the whole family into an area of the den..

All of this. Outrageous energy. They need a job or they will drive you crazy. The one dog my friends had would LITERALLY play fetch with a flippy flopper until she died if you were dumb enough to keep throwing it.

Definitely. Breed has a high chance of hip dysplasia, so keeping them fit and active is a big deal

Yeah they naturally herd, especially kids. Pretty hilarious.
Dogs are brilliant and strong willed. Need a strong, disciplined owner. Needs lots of exercise and stimulation.

They shed a lot and need a job. They’ll give themselves jobs if you don’t and that can produce destructive behavior.

Needs tons of exercise. Roaming acreage is best.
Super smart. Need challenges and chances to learn and “work.”
Probably being gotten rid of for behavior issues that are the result of being bored.
I’d get one in a heartbeat but only if I could let it run a bunch and learn tricks and have jobs to do.

Welcome to owning a herding dog. These dogs require a lot of work for you and them. If you put the time in, it will be the best dog you ever owned, if you don’t it will probably destroy everything in revenge.
Make sure to brush out their coats and give them tasks. They learn incredibly fast, so training them is easy if you put in the effort.

Congrats on the running buddy. You need to keep that dog busy or else it will destroy furniture, carpet, walls, shoes, purses, etc.

I’ve had several. They will chase cars. They all do it. In their blood to chase/herd/corral.

We had one a few years back. Would fetch a ball until your arm would fall off! GREAT dog with kids. Over the top smart. they shed a lot, but if you keep them brushed daily (pain, but worth it), it is not bad.

Mine was an anomaly and very laid back. We went on long walks and I’d take him to the barn on weekends. He was an adult when I got him, though.

we had one growing up. they are incredibly smart. loved that dog. had to give her away because she kept "herding" kids on bikes as they rode by and one kid fell off and got hurt.
we gave her to a guy that lived 20 miles away. 2 days later she showed back up at our house
ended up having to sedate her with some benadryl before giving her to our barber that lived 10 miles out of town. she lived a long happy life there with his other dogs

I want one badly, but it'd be cruel to have one while living in a heavily urban area and with my work schedule.

My wife had a Sheltie when we were first married, so same thing. That damn thing was always trying to herd us whenever we moved.
