When people have more disposal income my business soars. I'm getting record numbers for Feb March and April.
How mad are you OP ?
Aren't you in OH? If people there now have disposable income, maybe you should tell them to pay their mortgages. I just picked up work in that state because it has some of the highest foreclosure rates in the country.

and 200k is the low end for directional drillers
Maybe for gulf directional drillers or overseas. But, this is pretty high for the vast majority which were land rigs.

Lol....Just because we are in a "historic" downturn in the O&G industry doesn't mean it is over, chief
Chances of it getting back to 100/barrel are slim to none

people said we would never see $2/gallon gas again just like 2 years ago

But, this is the same thing folks said about $20s per barrel.

I agree with that

This creates jobs in other areas of the economy that wouldn't be there if gas was over $4 a gallon.
Please enlighten us on what jobs are created when gas prices drop.

That must be nationwide average. And that includes people who work for the VA or universities. No one in private practice makes that little.

Yeah, Schlumberger lists pay as $120-$200k

And yet some of you idiots love to laugh at "low gas prices". You don't see the other side of the coin. This isn't just affecting the top but real people are losing their jobs and livelihood.
This happens in all industries. No one is having all these whoa is me threads about computer prices being low as hell and yearly layoffs in that industry.

Look, all I'm saying is I explored Colorado this weekend with two tanks of gas for under $60. I also bought flights to Europe for under $800 each. I see the other side of the coin, I just don't care. No one felt bad for me when I got laid off in the tech industry last year. Oil Field made good money with little education. The other side of the coin from easy money out of high school is easy decisions to lay people off when shite hits the fan.

So how are oil prices affecting petroleum engineers? Just curious because I remember it being the highest paid engineering degree when I was a student. What's going to happen to the students who are in their third and fourth years of undergrad?

This guy gets it. O&G workers want us to bend over backwards to fix their problem. The fact of the matter is, every industry sees a downturn and people lose jobs. People at the top, people at the bottom. It's a reality of life in a 1st world country, and if you don't prepare for the bad times, you're going to have a bad time.
For me though, I'm rolling all that spare money I have into investments.

I'd put some white trash, oil field money on it getting back to 100...but that's just me

This is what the OT does. How on earth do you know this? Everyone on my team of 9 has minimum 2 degrees, with one having 4.

change to mechanical/chemical/civil/electrical before they graduate.

They are going to enter the workforce at the same level playing field as everyone else. Most graduates aren't working in their respective field of study and are making shitty pay. Petro Engineers have had the luxury of having jobs waiting after graduation, that wasn't the case for most students entering the work force. I'm supposed to feel bad that the frat boys now have to beg daddy for a job?
