They are going to bring it back. We will find out. This is not a big deal.

Not a big deal? They’re already 4 years behind SpaceX. They’ve already lost operational flights to SpaceX. This will delay operational flights by at least another year. And we know Boeing has already lost at least $1.5B on the program. Every additional flight they lose makes it worse.

This entire fiasco is a huge embarrassment for Boeing at the worst possible time for them, and it has objectively been a failure financially. Saying it’s “not a big deal” is absurd. I don’t think it’s going to be the end of Boeing as a supplier but it’s certainly a big deal.

The government screws up most everything. So maybe it is their fault.
NASA (the government) actually did a fantastic job with leading and pioneering the space program until Obama gutted it, ultimately forcing third party companies to pick up the game without the full deck of cards.

But you can't tell me "the government" screwed up the space program. They got that one right.

I'm going to disagree with you on this. They did get the early days of space flight right, especially with the Apollo program. But non-accountable decision-making creeped in and we got the space shuttle program, which was decent in terms of heavy lift but unable to go into any sort of deep space flight. And, it was WAY more expensive than it was supposed to be. In fact, it's budget requirements squeezed a ton of the R&D funding and this is why we had no real capability once the shuttle was retired. Yes, we did have a number of amazing (non-rocket) space programs but it had become hit or miss by the time Obama came into office.

In short, Obama exacerbated the decline to the waste with adding spurious goals to NASA but they had become a typical government boondoggle agency long before that.

The govt nailed the space program 50 years ago.

There is a chance this goes wrong and the astronauts die. A small chance less than 5% but a chance.

NASA and Boeing would rather Space X take that chance.

Elon would rather take that chance because he feels he is the best shot at getting the astronauts home.

This is an example of how the 3 organizations view risk.

Boeing needs to get these folks home safely by any means necessary then start at the top with full reviews. Every person, project and process needs questioning and revamping if need be. Throw out DEI or anything that isn't focused on pure success of the mission and profit for the stakeholders.

To be fair, we were a lot more invested in the space program during the Apollo years.

I can agree with you here. I think a more extensive debate could be had as to why/when the program started falling apart and declining, but my initial comment was directed more towards the blanket statement that the government screwed up the space program.

Is this a setup by NASA/who ever runs the US government to get Elon to take the hit if the rescue fails?
