Aerospace giant Boeing is preparing to alert pilots of its new 737 Max line of passenger jets warning that inaccurate readings in an onboard flight-monitoring system can cause the planes “to abruptly dive,” Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing a source with knowledge of the matter. According to Bloomberg, the safety warning is linked to the crash of a Lion Air aircraft last week off the coast of Indonesia, killing an estimated 189 people. The news agency wrote that “existing procedure” can be used to compensate for the issue, which appears to be the result of a serious problem with systems designed to prevent the jets from stalling at dangerously high speeds: The bulletin from Boeing will alert airlines that erroneous readings from a flight-monitoring system can cause the planes to abruptly dive, said the person, who asked not to be named discussing details of the manufacturer’s plans. Boeing will warn pilots to follow an existing procedure to handle the problem, the person said.

Increasingly complex systems do increasingly unpredictable things.

If I'm reading that right, it sounds like a feature created to prevent the Air France type of accident from occuring can cause a crash in its own right.

Can't win for losing.

I watched an Al Jazeera report about Boeing planes assembled in South Carolina as being unsafe because they are sacrificing quality to meet deadlines.

This sounds more like a problem with the software

So are they basically saying they’re at fault for the death of 189 people?

No, they're issuing safety warnings. Not saying it caused the crash.

If the plane “abruptly dove” due to some crazy flight monitoring software malfunction then the pilots should have simply turned off the autopilot and pulled up. But Asian pilots suck pretty fricking bad so I wouldn’t be surprised if they rode it all the way in wondering why the computer wasn’t saving them.

But if I remember correctly, this was a brand new Boeing? To me, that would seem to be more consistent with a software malfunction rather than a material one.

I bet their stock is taking a dive just like their planes.

Closed at over $366 today, up $4 from opening. Doing just fine.

eta: $366 not $336

Story came out after the bell. You can look up a stock price and can’t look that up? Get back to me tomorrow afternoon.

Boeing stock was at a low of $354 the day after one of their newest planes crashed. Boeing has a $50 billion backlog of orders to fill. Their stock will be fine.

This is why human pilots will never be obselete.

The more complex a system, the more likely it is to fail.
