No, they're issuing safety warnings. Not saying it caused the crash.
Correct. There is already a procedure on how to deal with erroneous angle of attack data as there is with most all other issues. Pilot training is the key.

pilots should have simply turned off the autopilot and pulled up.
If the report is accurate, the issue can only arise during manual flight controls.
Just because autopilot is off does not mean the computers are not controlling flight controls and information.

“Abruptly dive”? Sounds like a pretty bad euphemism for crash to the ground.

Weren't there 2 accidents with 737's years back that had something to do with hydraulic valve that would get stuck or move too far one direction?
I think one did the same thing but the captain was able to recover.
I guess aircraft are like cars; never buy the first production year.

controlling flight controls
The 737MAX is not a fly-by-wire aircraft (except the spoilers). With autopilot off, the pilot is hand flying the airplane. The controls are hydraulically assisted but not computer controlled.

Boeing will warn pilots to follow an existing procedure to handle the problem, the person said.
That seems unacceptable to me. I want the problem fixed structurally.

This is incredibly accurate. I'm stealing this.

My chances of flying in a Boeing 737 Max just took an "abrupt dive".

Holy chit!!! Did Boeing get this info out of the black box of the Lion air that crashed or did they know about it before the crash??
Posted on 11/7/18 at 7:37 am to BR Tiger
I think that is what “abruptly dive” means.

I don't doubt that there may be a system fault in a very complex avionics system.
But like the Asiana crash at SFO a few years back, the dominant factor is likely shitty Asian carrier pilots that are trained to sit back and let the plane fly itself and can't react to anything.

Train pilots to fly the plane instead of just managing a computer.

There is a smartphone video of the previous flight of this aircraft on YouTube. The plane is in a severe downward orientation with the right side of the aircraft dipping as well. It is a pretty horrifying video, with everyone on the aircraft yelling, praying and crying.
Lion Air should be shut down for what they did to those people. It is horrific. And Boeing needs to do much more than a warning. They need to ground all of them and fix the problem.

The project manager for a lot of Boeing's FBW software was a female LSU engineering grad from Deridder LA, but I think she left Boeing some time back.

But Asian pilots suck pretty fricking bad so I wouldn’t be surprised if they rode it all the way in wondering why the computer wasn’t saving them.
