My ex-wife and I went to a birthday party for the husband of a couple we were friends with a while back. The party was at a nice restaurant and approximately 10 people showed up, some singles, some couples. At the end of the meal, people paid for their part of the bill and we all paid a portion of the birthday couple’s bill so they paid nothing.
It was a little dicey because a couple of the single guys who had drinks during the meal dropped a $20 bill or two on the table and left before the check arrived. The wife of the birthday couple’s pre-ordered a nice cake from the restaurant and it was way overpriced. But in the end, everyone paid what they thought they should in keeping with the spirit of the occasion .

Only thing I can add is I was a waiter at a fine dining establishment in New Orleans, where 8 women left a grand total of $4 as tip.

Wow. That ghetto trash doesn’t belong in a nice restaurant. Typical, though, of today’s female.
That said, if someone invites people to a meal they should expect to pay unless it’s said beforehand everyone pays for themselves. If I invite I am prepared to pay unless otherwise states, but that’s just me.
