Admittedly, they've got "good public schools" in the suburbs... I get that can be an appeal when there's like 7 in the whole state, but if you're opening up the map, than what's the difference between the 'burb education in elsewhere?

The Alabama/Auburn football talk is so heavy because it's by far the most interesting talking point. I swear, someone farts in Tuscaloosa and it's a topic of conversation at BCC.

The city's best quality is that it's close to other places worth going to and the cost of living is low.

But let's not pretend this is anyone's first choice.

People getting defensive over people's opinions on a city is always funny to me. Who cares really? Maybe I'm boring, but I enjoy hitting Good People for a few beers then walking across the street to a Barons game. Beats going to Mellow Mushroom in Chattanooga and walking a couple of blocks to the Lookouts stadium, and it's better than having the minor league park in the suburbs.

Birmingham is the best-kept secret in the south. Trust me on this.

Birmingham is great. Huntsville is pretty boring but great if your just worried about suburban life.

If you don’t have any kids, look at Forest Park, Avondale or Crestwood. If you have kids, Homewood is right over the mountain but good luck finding a house at a reasonable price.

Birmingham is building at a pretty high clip right now. Lots of new mix use and downtown apartments going up. The new football Stadium downtown is about finished along with a renovation of the BJCC. People always talk about the crime but you won’t ever find yourself in the places where it’s taking place.

The housing market is insane everywhere in the south. Huntsville is a great place for a transplant as many folks there moved from somewhere else. However, it is a tornado magnet so be sure to buy a home with a basement.

Been a lifer of the Birmingham area…within a 50 mile radius or so. So I can vouch for here. Birmingham does have a good amount of things to do and the location is good in that you can take a drive and be in lots of different terrains, including the beach. Honestly it’s more favorable to me than the other two cities because a beach trip is long enough as is from Birmingham. No need to add a couple more hours to it. The Birmingham suburbs, over the mountain in particular should be plenty good to go as far as safety and decent scenery too.

I was born and raised specifically in the Homewood area too so I have that perspective, a nice OTM suburb and good schools.

I've heard about the housing in Birmingham, but can the local economy support it? I get Huntsville with Cummings, Redstone, Mazda-Toyota, NASA. But Birmingham? Jefferson County was literally bankrupt. Steel is produced predominately by China. Who are the top employers? UAB? Regions?

There’s a lot of pseudo close companies growing and thriving nearby such as Mercedes and all of it’s tentacles as well as the Amazon distribution center to name a couple in addition to UAB, etc.

UAB is the top employer in the entire state. Healthcare and finance are pretty big industries here, and likely aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

The JeffCo bankruptcy is kind of ancient history. They're doing fine financially now, though the sewer rates for customers are pretty outrageous. A tl;dr background on the bankruptcy is it was mostly caused by corruption with the some county commissioners on a huge sewer project. 2 or 3 of those former commissioners served prison time.

If you're looking to buy a mini-van and end your life in some sort of helter-skelter, "American Beauty meets the Southern Baptist Church with Finebaum on in the background," then maybe Birmingham is your answer. My wife is from there and everytime we go back for Holidays I'm bored out of my ever-loving mind. I'd either become an alcoholic, have 20 kids, or start a cult, because you will need something to help the time pass.

This made me laugh

Not because it's accurate, but because Huntsville is like if someone modeled a city after a Honda Odyssey.

It's funny listening to the people living in Pelham/Chelsea/etc complain about Birmingham crime when they've only been downtown twice in the past 10 years for a doctors appointment at UAB. Much like any mid-major city, you're only going to find crime if you're looking for it.

Birmingham, Chatanooga, and Huntsville are all pretty similar in terms of amenities, with Birmingham having the edge in the restaurant scene. Job market depends on your field. If you find yourself bored in Birmingham you're going to be bored in the other two cities. Everywhere in Bham metro proper is expensive right now, so if that's your concern you might want to try Huntsville before it blows up even more.

Have to remember that Birmingham MSA is more than twice the size of Huntsville MSA. There are plenty of big employers in the area. They fall into various buckets: healthcare - UAB, Encompass, Children's, etc.; finance and banking with Regions, BBVA, Protective Life; construction and contracting - Brasfield, Vulcan, BE&K, Harbert, etc.; what I would call conglomerates like McWane and EBSCO; and what remains of the steel/coal/manufacturing sector - Drummond, Motion Industries, etc. And each of those sectors has its own little ecosystem around it.

Yeah, if someone finds Birmingham boring then I have some really bad news for them about Huntsville.

I just moved to Huntsville about a year ago, I am pleasantly surprised and am really enjoying the place. Beautiful landscape too with all the mountains, tennessee river and lake guntersville.

I’ve been in the Birmingham area for a couple years now and I love it. So many cool breweries and restaurants. Good golf and outdoor activities

I think bham has an underrated food scene. Helen, ovensbird, hot and hot, gianmarcos, bettolo and many more I have tried are fantastic places to eat. The club in Birmingham is also a great spot that overlooks downtown.
