even if they bought every person in new orleans two bikes before starting this they will still see every bike stolen every time until the close up shop.

You're just being silly here. As someone who has an AIRBNB that numerous people have booked for conferences, many of my guests would use a bike share to ride to the convention center, especially from October - April.

People keep saying it won't work because people will steal the bikes.
The thing is they stick out and are probably tracked.
Don't cost much more than a shopping cart and companies retrieve those and scrap yards have banned them.
These bikes have no resale value, can't be scrapped and stick out, so what theft value do they have?

no one is going to ride to the convention center on a bicycle as a sweaty mess, youre just pulling shite out of your arse; it was over 80 degrees all October.
so for those who attend a convention, you might get 4 months max of any potential users.

This is my issue we don't have that many bike lanes and most we have are shared and I see a lot of ghost bikes.
I wonder if you die on a rental do you only get a temporary ghost bike.

im not worried about theft
i just dont see new orleans doing proper maintenance to keep the bikes operating properly or the clientele who is going to consistently ride one
id love to be proven wrong though

Lexington did one a couple of years ago, within 2 months all the bikes were gone.

When I lived in Birmingham and they introduced these, I was surprised by how well received they were. I definitely noticed a few being used in a bad part of town miles from any stations (doubt they were ever returned). Didn't read the article but hopefully New Orleans gets the "electric assist" bikes similar to the ones used in the Birmingham program. Granted, no way in hell would I ride one of these from my place to the Quarter. I can see people riding them around the FQ though.

The one here in Richmond recently started and I tried it out for a month. Wasn't bad but we have more dedicated bike lanes than NOLA so it will be interesting to see what sorts of problems arise.
I read through the TOS for the one here, and it stipulates that if you do not dock the bike within a set number of hours (90 or so) and you don't file a report with the city police department your credit card will be charged $2000 for the loss.

Dallas now has 4 different bike share companies. No membership, just like $1.00 an hour. Also there aren't any dedicated bike racks, you just leave them wherever and the app tells the next person where the nearest one is. They're pretty popular here, but the bikes are literally everywhere. People just leave them laying in the street, in lots in the middle of nowhere etc
