I've enjoyed trying out bike share in many cities on trips including, DC, NYC, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Denver. I know all the reasons why this won't work in New Orleans but I honestly hope it works out. There will be a station 2 blocks from my house I will probably consider a monthly membership, if for nothing else riding downtown on the weekend and not having to worry about locking up my own bike.

What happens if the bike is stolen while you have it?

I can 100% guarantee you this is going to backfire.

You're going to have folks from out of town renting bikes to cruise around the quarter and they are going to get mugged. It is an absolute certainty.

I wouldn't ride a bike through Chicago or new orleans as an adult.

Roads and drivers in new Orleans aren't the best for it.

So there will be stolen, unusable bikes laying around everywhere.

im skeptical that this will work here but i guess its worth a shot

im just not seeing where all the demand for these things is going to come from.

First, Bikeshare has worked in other cities with dense downtown areas and significant numbers of tourist travelers, New Orleans has both of those attributes. Second, none of the stations are in the hood and I think will require a credit card to use. I really think/hope this can work here.

1 - our downtown is not "dense" so thats cute

2 - our tourists are either a) fat, lazy drunken slobs or b) convention center attendees (neither are going to rent a bike)
