Except today's oil production is based on horizontal drilling that significantly inflated the per barrel cost of extraction (when compared to traditional oil and gas plays) and needs a lot of hydraulic fracturing further increasing extraction costs.
Plus the commodities trading market has gotten ever more sophisticated, increasing the impact OPEC can have on domestic prices.

OT thinks you can drill a hole. It's so easy to do that in the first place. And oil comes out the ground like puss out of pimples on their arse

No it's obviously Obama and inflation that are behind the O&G sector's trouble. It certainly isn't that shale plays and light tight oil are a fundamentally more expensive product to extract.

No, he was probably paid pretty well for his hard work and dedication. Most people with a similar level of education don't get paid nearly that much.
However, like many lines of work, business can be cyclical. That's why you save in times of plenty.
yeah this is the argument
yes it can be a shite job and you sacrifice, but that's why you get paid way above market level for your skill/education status
and yes, it is a cyclical industry that is very volatile. that is why you save that massive salary you receive when working in the oil field. that way during the down time, you can still support your family and unlike the heavy times, you have even more time to "make up" for all the time you missed
that's how it's supposed to work

The prices are artificially low. OPEC is dumping crude to drive US producers out of business so they can have a monopoly on the market again. I am a huge libertarian and free market guy but this is an attack on our national security and our economy. This is the only time I would recommend import tariffs on a barrel of oil to make it a market price of $60.00.
if you're a libertarian then you should be happy that they're doing this because we are getting a double benefit
Saudi Arabia is subsidizing our petro usage. so SA is spending it's own money in order to make the lives of our society (overall) better by cutting costs to our society, so that that excess can be spend elsewhere (double benefit)
yes, it sucks when protectionist policies hurt individual industries, but you have to look macro, and we come out way ahead

Shiiiiiit. None of the ones I know work anything but regular schedules and if they get OT, it's time and a half...at least. I had call damn near every holiday for the past who knows how many years. Not to mention the week night calls and other bullshite. For that, I get paid jack shite. So, no sympathy here.

Not everyone makes a massive salary. Office workers don't make 150K a year. I mean some do but not everyone.

The dollar is relatively strong right now and that is hurting exporters and helping importers. Perhaps you should go brush up on some economics.

Sorry oil workers, you entered that industry for the insane profits that can be generated when oil is trending upwards in price. But you know (or should have known) that the price of oil changes every day, and had gone up 3-4 times it's value from 12 years ago. It had gone up an unsustainable amount, the only thing that increases like that is stock. And stock often plummets and people on Wall Street lose their jobs when that happens.
But you enter those industries for the lucrative rewards, you have to accept the risks as well. I'd rather no one lose their jobs, but most of you wouldn't accept a pay cut either, so they have to fire you instead

I'm not sure why you're threadshitting on this topic, but all of your posts have been extreme exaggerated examples, much like the all cops are bad, all blacks are criminals, etc. type generalizations. You may not feel the effects yet, and if I remember correctly you're in health care, so you likely won't feel much, but your family and friends in other industries are going to feel it soon if things don't stabilize.
These prices are very unsustainable, and God help us if the pendulum swing is extreme in the other direction. You think $4/gallon was bad?

Exactly. Runaway inflation has not been an issue in the U.S. in this century.

I didn't read all six pages, but will venture to guess that TD assumes only rednecks living paycheck to paycheck lost their jobs.
Not IT, engineers, salesmen, accountants...

Well, most people don't save money, that's the problem. It's not just oilfield workers that are guilty.
I agree. But who is saying these people didn't save? The market and industry tanked and many have lost jobs but I know some that lived as anyone else would and have savings and did well with there money. I think there's a generalization that all were/are overpaid rednecks.

There is no thinking right here, it's a certainty.

Most of those skills are in demand so finding a job for them shouldn't be that difficult.
