The prices are artificially low. OPEC is dumping crude to drive US producers out of business so they can have a monopoly on the market again. I am a huge libertarian and free market guy but this is an attack on our national security and our economy. This is the only time I would recommend import tariffs on a barrel of oil to make it a market price of $60.00. That would help our domestic producers stay in business. We would have to pay $2.75 a gallon for gasoline though. I could live with that.

Just to be clear, you support a tax on fuel to come from the consumer and go directly to the oil companies?

WTF is that shite?

For a lot less pay since the supply side greatly increased.

No it's not. I know quite a few people that have made a good living working hard in the oil patch that always lived within their means, raised families, paid college tuition and are just working people.

And I don't see the obsession with F250's. It's a truck and doesn't cost much more than most vehicles out there- not to mention they are all over and not just oilfield.

I appreciate the cheaper gas and hate so see any industry take a hit especially one close to home but I also don't see all the people crying about it that everyone claims.

I know a petro engineer who got laid off and is now working with the roughnecks he used to engineer for because he couldn't find more work fast enough.

This quote validated.

Exactly. Maybe then I could more easily get back into O&G.

Everyone doesn't realize that o&g engineers aren't necessarily a plug and play option for chem or other industries.

The dollar is relatively strong right now and that is hurting exporters and helping importers

I was thinking of quitting the exporting and focusing more on the importing.

You aren't wrong. The current economics do help importers, and the U.S. still bans the export of unrefined crude. That just isn't the whole story though, when shale producers cost to extract is double (or more in certain plays) the Saudi's costs, then you are going to see struggling and bankrupt producers.

Saudi is still producing from cheaper formations and therefore they can outcompete U.S producers

I understand that. That doesn't mean we should tariff imports though just because the shale plays aren't profitable.

We should lift the restrictions on exporting crude, however.

Agreed on that. I don't want tariffs or anything. My current business is in support of commodities trading, so tariffs aren't a good thing for me.

My point was more that this isn't a political or a fed created issue. It is an engineering driven issue with the high extraction costs of U.S. oil. Bitching about the is just bits around the details of this current situation.

These prices are very unsustainable

As long as the global economy - especially Europe and China - keep slagging, prices aren't going to do anything. If anything, prices might be a bit inflated because the U.S. has managed to keep charging on while the rest of the world slacks. You want to see prices really crater? Wait until the Chinese real estate bubble pops.
