Go to Maggard's razor and look into their safety razor handles and heads. I prefer the MR5 handle and V3 head.

You're saying over the past 3 years, you've spent less than $35 on razors/blades?

Yes - You can buy 130 Dorco twin blade razors for $35

Get yourself a double edge razor. Pack of 100 blades is $12 on Amazon.

Shaving every day I would go through about 1.5 cartridges per week. So in three years I would go through about $63 worth of Dorco cartridges and about $10 of Astra blades.

The only ACTUAL benefit is that the blades are far cheaper than buying cartridges from Gillette, Schick, etc.

You've either never tried shaving with a safety razor, or you did it wrong.

The safety razor doesn't shave any closer. The blade(s) on both are more than sharp enough to cut the hair. Now, using a 5 blade razor (which is absolutely ridiculous) definitely could cause more skin irritation than a single blade safety razor since you are unnecessarily cutting more thin layers of skin than necessary, but if you use a reasonable cartridge (2 blades preferred, but 3 MAX), you can get the exact same closeness of shave without irritation. Plus, a safety razor takes a little more technique since you have to provide the proper angle of the blade vs. that already being built in to the cartridge. Because of that most people are more prone to nick themselves with the safety razor vs. a cartridge.

I've bought, cleaned up, polished, and sold quite a few old Gillette safety razors. I use a good ultrasonic cleaner and hand polish. They still command a high price, particularly the more popular models. I have a beard, so I shave very little, but I used safety razors every day in the past.
I buy every adjustable Gillete razor I can find and any "Fat Boy" that is reasonably priced.

Conversely, it's a lot easier to change the angle of approach with a safety razor than with a cartridge. This is important because there are very many men with hair growing at an angle different than what the cartridges are designed for.

Merkur 34c or Mühle r89
Astra Stainless blades are a bit under half the price of Feathers (11c vs 25c last I compared) and roughly as sharp.
Shark Super Chrome blades are also nice and cheaper

But for a starter, I wouldn't stray far from the above razors unless looking at something like a cheap plastic feather (stainless head, only $12).
