That's why I suggested the American Bulldog. A big, loving animal and is considered one of the healthier breeds.

Weenie dog for a house or subdivision dog, lab for a rural halfway working dog.

Boxer, protective at the same time good with kids

My boxer loves our one year old.

As far as protective, maybe the males or one from a different breeder. My boxer is freaking scared of everything. Intimidating as hell, but will run from anything. Terrified of the baby gates.

I knew a guy who owned a Golden Doodle and that dog was pretty adorable. Didn't shed either.

Had 2 boxers. Great dogs..loyal, smart, awesome with kids. Unfortunately prone to cancer. One died of lymphoma cancer at 4 yrs and the other of brain tumor at 9.

Have a blue heeler now. Will never have another dog unlessits a heeler.

My French mastiff is really good with my year and half son, and is a great guard dog but is really hard headed. He knows many commands but loves to do his own thing and test the limits daily. Definitely not the best dog I've owned. I'd probably say go golden retreiver, but I've never owned one.

In my experience the females were actually more protective and aggressive. They're certainly individuals, so ymmv. Growing up our boxer was incredibly loving to anyone in the family and accepting of anyone who was with us when we introduced her, but wind up in our backyard without someone in the family introducing you and you better watch your arse. Her parents were the same way when we went to pick her up. Sire was a friendly goofball. Dame was a highly trained, award winning (iirc) guard dog.

Labrador or Golden Retriever.

I hear Dobermans are great family dogs.

I've had cockers, labs, jack Russell's, and a bunch of mutts. The mutts were the most loving, and affectionate, and easiest to care for

Best dog I've had was a Shetland Sheepdog. However, they shed and like all sheepdogs they nip at heals, so they might not be best with small children. Worst dog I have ever owned was a Pekingese. It had an odor that I was unable to get rid of and it was completely unsociable.

I think Poodles and Schnauzer are great dogs for pets in general. I have owned both and you get a high energy dog in the size you want, both dogs love kids, are generally healthy and long lived, and neither dog sheds. They are both the perfect dog on paper.
