Best dog breed as a pet is?

2In 20yrs of marriage, 18 were with a dog or 2. Now, none (RIP Sparky and Lulu).
Curious what OT canine experts are thinking...

They are protective, loyal, and I like their athletic aesthetic. I would have to have a place with a large yard to get one though because they are very high energy dogs.

I am open to other suggestions, but I've never encountered a golden retriever I didn't like.
They're probably the surest bet for a good all around dog IMO.

Labs and Golden Retrievers are also great.

they are basically couch potatoes until you take them outside and let them run and then they are basically the fastest dog in existence.
