No dogs is best answer. No life when owning a dog

German Shepherd best dog I have had!! Great with family - very protective! Awesome as a guard dog. Get them from a good breeder though. Mine is awesome !

hey're probably the surest bet for a good all around dog IMO.
I've had 3. The first protected my baby girl like she was his, wouldn't leave her side. The second jumped in front of me body blocking me as I started to bend down to lift a limb to place in a fire. She took a bite from a copperhead on the nose. One year later same dog did nearly the same thing preventing my son from a bite. She took that one on her lip. My third dog was the daughter of my second dog. My daughter slipped in my pond and she jumped in helping her till she could stand up. You don't teach that, they just do it.

Dang, only one response with cur dog... I grew up with my dad having several curs.. Always seemed loyal and protective... I've always wanted one of my own.. Just need a fence for my yard..

Golden Retriever...
Not a one owner dog. They love everyone and are easy to train.

We have had beagles our whole marriage. They are great. They aren't needy and they are great with kids.

German Shepherds are great dogs, but they can be a handful to deal with. They are very bonded to their family and by bonded I mean they will follow you everywhere (separation anxiety). They only shed once a year, but it last for 365 days so a good vacuum is a must. They need to be socialized from a puppy because they can become way over protective if not. They have an extended puppy stage until they are about 3 years old. Mine is just about to turn 7 and has slowed down some but still like to play most days. She is very gentle and loving to my 8 month old, but she does try to herd him when he crawls away from where she thinks he should be.

These threads always just end up being 10+ pages of people showing photos and bragging about their dog.
We all think our dog is the best dog on earth (myself included). OP, do some research and make the decision on your own. Personally, I think if there are no limitations like someone being allergic or something, you should rescue a dog that needs it. But regardless of what you choose, you don't seem to have a specific size or anything in mind, so read around and make whatever decision is best for you.

There is a very unknown dog that is just amazing with other dogs and kids. A perfect family dog.
It's called a McNab. You'll notice it looks like a short haired border collie

I want a French Mastiff for our next dog once our lab passes away(poor girl is 13 now). How does your Mastiff get along with other dogs? We have a Old English Bulldog that has a alpha complex. It took awhile for me to "break his spirit" and I am the only one he submits to. Not sure I can handle two dogs like this at once lol.
He will try to be the alpha. Right now he sees me first, then him and then anyone else. He gets along with our other dog which is a 40lb mix female. He does not care for other male dogs. You'll have to be real careful in working them in together. If you get the mastiff as a puppy you shouldn't have to big of a challenge, just start obedience training early and stick with it. He's going to test you alot.

Several items here:
1. There is no BEST breed...but there's the right fit for you. Buy a book, do your research, ask friends and family, and hang around the various breeds.
2. Make sure you research the breeder closely if you want a specific type dog. Disposition can vary between lines.
3. Whatever you decide, please please please TRAIN YOUR DOG! This means spending at least 30 mins - 1 hr a day when they are puppies. It will pay off in spades.
As for me, i like larger, SMART, athletic dogs:
Collies (they actually don't shed much, great family dogs, will chill when you do or run when you do, and everyone likes a Collie)
German Shepherds
German Short Hair Pointer (especially if you hunt)
Goldens
Great Danes
If I wanted a smaller smart dog, I'd find a Border Collie

We've always had Labs and Standard Poodles, they've always been smart and easily trained. I doubt I deviate too much from them, as I know what to expect.

I guess it depends on what "life" is.. My wife and I spend most of our free time hiking and camping, so having the dog around is great. If we leave the country, we've got plenty of friends and family to watch them. I'm so accustomed to having a dog's companionship I wouldn't want to live without one.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you reserve your Vizsla? We just had two vizsla reservations fall through because we want a female and were too far down on the waiting list. Looking for a new breeder.
