My main concern is that I just don't want to be in a super rowdy college apt area. I am 6 years out of school, married, and want something a bit more chill.
Stay away from "West Campus".

Which one is the best city for golfers?

Houston blows. Austin is alright. Dallas is the best.

DFW has courses on every block pretty much.

Driving isn't really an issue - I just prefer to bike everywhere.

I'm doing a school visit in a few months and I'll check out these areas.
What is your price range?
I would look for a garage apartment or apartment within biking distance, north of campus. Look in Hyde Park, Rosedale, Allandale, Brentwood, and Crestview. Those are pretty quiet areas. You could also move further north and try to find some place along the Rapid Bus routes, which you can bring your bike with you. The rapid buses are pretty nice and have few stops. Or you could try to find a place along the metro rail route, but the train gets crowded and bringing a bike on it can be a pain during rush hour.

I don't golf. But it seems like, from this LINK that the most top courses are clustered around DFW.

DFW easily

The public courses are really nice, but the pace of play is rushed because a lot of people play. Country clubs are pristine. TPC Craig ranch, in one of the richest parts of DFW is insane.

Dallas is def the best for golf. Houston has a serious lack of good public courses. San Antonio is probably second to DFW

Craig Ranch is great, Stonebridge is nice as well.

When I lived in SA my friends were always golfing. So just as an anecdote, I think it is probably #2 to DFW in terms of golf. That's something that wasn't true when I lived in Houston and isn't really super-prevalent in Austin, which just isn't a hardcore golf-type culture. Dallas though, culturally and literally - as in being just littered with courses - is a golf town.

SA has some great tracks and a really underrated municipal circuit. Houston has some fantastic private courses but a serious lack of good public courses for a city its size, and they're all out in the suburbs except one (Memorial) where you have to enter a lottery to get your tee time on the weekend

Fort Worth, Austin, Dallas, Houston.

Fort Worth isn't really that great.

Houston is the leader in food. I will say that for it. In terms of variety, number, and quality of restaurants. Austin has some pretty stellar eateries and is a blossoming foodie scene (apart from food trucks) but it's much smaller, with way fewer places, and can't beat Houston in terms of multi ethnic offerings, or in terms of great cheap food AND great fine dining. It's actually hard to even keep up with the restaurant scene in Houston. Dallas has always underwhelmed me in the food department. There will be restaurants there that my friends are excited to take me to but I always end up thinking "this is like X in San Antonio, but not as good" or "Really similar to Y in Houston, but less awesome."

I'm no Austin homer, and the city has its flaws, but for a city of its size Austin has a great airport.
The airport really hits above its weight in terms of destinations offered which to me is very important in a city.
