Whoa, quick reply late at night. Thanks

No worries, the dog is freaking out at the weather and keeping me up.

Her office will be around 6th and Congress.

You'll want to find something south of town lake, North of Slaughter Ln. That'll make an easy commute avoiding any highway.

We mess with Google Maps and put the times for rush hour and it puts things slightly over 20 minutes from the SoCo area. But we've heard the horrors of the Mopac so that's why we looked to that area.

Everything is going to be red at rush hour. Austin only has north/south main roads, no east/west plus there are too many people here for the roads. Traffic is bad from 4-6. Just try to live as close to work as possible. The Mopacalypse is just making it worse right now.

Seemed like that south area was good with Lamar Blvd, 1st Street and South Congress having things to do. Not to mention a grocery store under 10 minutes. HUGE because I prefer going a few times a week over doing 2 hour 400 dollar trips.

You'll also want to find a place in between Mopac and I35. I like the area a few blocks off congress. Lamar is too busy and commercial for me to live there. The HEB on Congress and oltorff maybe the worst HEB ever but there are other options, I don't really go grocery shopping so take my opinion on that with a grain of salt.

If she's working DT and you can work from home I'd recommend looking around Travis heights, and the bouldin Creek area. They are central, nice, and quiet.

Very solid advice here. My in laws live in Round Rock, and I worked for my FIL throughout college, who was a plumbing contractor there, and we worked all over town. Off Enfield Rd by the dame and Mozarts in my favorite little area. Its tucked off Mopac, and offers relatively easy access to downtown. Hyde Park and just north of that by the intramural fields is also a nice area.

that new TSA security checkpoint they opened up last year is a gamechanger

Was badly, badly needed. The one knock I had about the airport before that was that the TSA waits were disproportionately long.

And yeah, the airport is great. It's easy to park at, easy to get from the parking lot to the terminal, easy to get around, they keep it very clean, and it's newish as airports go and very bright and open. The joke used to be that it was an "international" airport but all flights really only went to Dallas or Houston, but in the past few years the number of directs domestically and internationally have been growing.

Has been overrated for almost 5 years. It is overcrowded, liberal, and packed with homeless and Californians. Fun place to visit, but definitely one of the worst places to live in Texas. Hell, I barely consider it Texas.

Where do you people come from? It's like you you've taken every stereotype you've ever heard and just ran with it.

Are there issues - sure. Housing is expensive and scarce, traffic can really suck, and yes, more and more people are moving here.

That said, the people that are moving here are educated and employed - I could give two-shits from where they come, as they generally like the Texas culture once they get here.

The economy is great, so I have no clue why someone said if you need a full-time job, then you shouldn't look here. As long as you're not looking for a job in oil, then you should be okay. Even manufacturing has picked-up in and around Central Texas.

There's a shite-ton of stuff to do here between festivals, music, SXSW, outdoor activities, etc. Anyone that says Austin is boring...isn't doing it right.

I mean, it doesn't surprise me that an Aggie is shitting on the town. I mean, I think we're all aware of the penis envy that has consistently come from College Station. And for anyone to use the Liberal angle in bashing Austin, then they're just not very smart, or have never looked at a voting map. Is Austin proper mostly Dem - sure, but every county around it in the MSA is BLOOD RED.

I'm no Austin homer, and the city has its flaws, but for a city of its size Austin has a great airport.

The airport really hits above its weight in terms of destinations offered which to me is very important in a city.

Ya, I was happy with the options it has. Having a good airport is important to me, and while we didn't end up at a big one in Dallas or Houston (options we didn't take), being between an American and United hub and not beholden to either is kind of nice too.

Still a cowtown though.

The educated and wealthy are pouring into Collin County....McKinney, Frisco, and Prosper to be exact.

It is nice being close to the Houston and Dallas airports. San Antonio has good options too. I fly to Mexico City and South America a couple times a year and the non stop options from SAT to MEX make it really convenient. Just an hours drive from my house.

McKinney was #3 place to live in 2013, #2 in 2014 and #1 place to live in the entire country by Forbes in 2015.

I think the one thing I have to determine is if I'm going to drive to those airports or fly out of AUS to them. I'm pretty lazy.

I'll drive to SAT. Fly to DFW/IAH.

If it were a big price difference I MIGHT consider driving to IAH. DFW is too far for me for me to drive.

it's not the liberals that are the issue. it's the TYPE of liberals. I know tons of people that are smart and disagree with me politically. That's fine.

if i could only count on one hand the stupid things i've heard, overheard, or seen in that town, it would be enough to merit the bashing.

the one that come to mind right now is that we were out in the arboretum for something and my wife wanted to run by target. so we did. we separated and as i was looking at men's clothes, two gentlemen were commenting on how they felt all the superhero men's underwear were to gender specific. It escalates to them talking to the manager about not carrying Wonder Woman men's underwear is denying gender roles.

WTF is that shite?

I've lived in Round Rock 9 years, do business all around town, and have never heard a conversation like that. I guess that's just not how we roll in Williamson county. Don't get me wrong Austin liberals are always around town but it's quite easy to avoid in everyday life.

Luckily, I've never heard a conversation like that. And I do own several t-shirts from the Arboretum Target!

Williamson County/Austin suburbs are a totally different world than in the city. The people I know who are from Round Rock/Cedar Park/Georgetown are conservative as frick. But there are a good amount of real dirty hippies down in the city of Austin. That's cool, I don't mind it and could totally live in Austin, but acting like it's the same as any other major US city is just wrong. Among cities I've been to San Fran, Seattle and Denver have it beat and that's it
