This is from yesterday. I searched TD but didn't find it. Sorry if Germans.

Berkeley, Calif., moved forward with a proposal Wednesday to eliminate police from conducting traffic stops and instead send unarmed civilian city workers.

The proposal is part of a broad overhaul of law enforcement – the City Council has set a goal of cutting the police budget by 50 percent.

“For far too long public safety has been equated with more police,” Mayor Jesse Arreguin said.

quote:

The reform plan also seeks to remove homeless outreach and mental health and crisis management from the jurisdiction of armed officers, according to the East Bay Times.

quote:

Black motorists such as Philando Castile in 2016 and Sandra Bland in 2015 have died as a result of encounters with police at traffic stops. More recently, police officers such as Washington state officer Jonathan Shoop and Tulsa Sgt. Craig Johnson have been killed during routine traffic stops.

In a joint statement, the police unions for Los Angeles, San Jose and San Francisco said that reckless driving, speeding and driving while under the influence are all dangerous “traffic” enforcement violations.

“We do not believe that the public wants lax enforcement of those incidents by non-sworn individuals," the unions said. "Traffic stops are some of the most dangerous actions police officers take. What happens when the felon with an illegal gun gets pulled over by the parking police? Nothing good, we’re sure of that.”

Am I wrong for hoping this passes so I can watch the shite show from afar?

Good luck.

People are stupid. Traffic stops are one of the best ways for cops to actually take initiative. Traffic stops lead to tons of good arrests. If you want to argue that not everything should be charged with a ticket or whatever, fine. But taking away traffic stops takes away the police’s ability to be proactive in the community beyond just enforcing the speed limit.

Why do they not use traffic cameras like everyone else as both are useless?

I thought Sandra Bland died while in jail?

quote:

Sandra Bland was a 28-year-old African American woman who was found hanged in a jail cell in Waller County, Texas, on July 13, 2015, three days after being arrested during a pretextual traffic stop.[1][2] Her death was ruled a suicide. It was followed by protests against her arrest, disputing the cause of death and alleging racial violence against her.[3][4]

Bland was pulled over for a minor traffic violation on July 10 by State Trooper Brian Encinia. The exchange escalated, resulting in Bland's arrest and a charge for assaulting a police officer. The arrest was partially recorded by Encinia's dashcam, a bystander's cell phone, and Bland's own cell phone. After authorities reviewed the dashcam footage, Encinia was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow proper traffic stop procedures.[5][6]

Texas authorities and the FBI conducted an investigation into Bland's death[5][7] and determined the Waller County jail did not follow required policies, including time checks on inmates and ensuring that employees had completed required mental health training.[8]

In December 2015, a grand jury declined to indict the county sheriff and jail staff for a felony relating to Bland's death. The following month, Encinia was indicted for perjury for making false statements about the circumstances surrounding Bland's arrest, and he was subsequently fired by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).[9] In September 2016, Bland's mother settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the county jail and police department for $1.9 million and some procedural changes.[10][11] In June 2017, the perjury charge against Encinia was dropped in return for his agreement to permanently end his law enforcement career.

In 2019, Bland's cell phone video became available to the public and to Bland's family for the first time.[12] The video was obtained and shown by Dallas news station WFAA.[13] This video was not available during the civil trials.[12]

So....this is to stop "racial profiling"

They act like police officers aren't actual human beings, therefore they just automatically "profile" people based on race.

I guess these unarmed civilians are just gonna be salt of the earth humans and therefore will have the inability to "racial profile." Oh...and also, get laughed at and/or their arse beat on the regular with no consequence.

I say go for it Berkley. You dumb mother frickers.

If you need proof of what liberal policies (like this one) do, look at every dem controlled inner city, but I say let them vote on it, they get what they deserve.

I’m not sure how it works now, but there should definitely be a difference between cops that enforce traffic violations vs cops for other situations. I don’t get why this distinction can’t just be made within the police force in terms of the individuals role and what weapons they carry on them, vs completely changing who is enforcing these laws

In the US, the people conducting the traffic stop have to be armed - no way around it. Too many violent criminals out there.

Let them use the cameras, and have the cameras look for every possible violation, every time, with 0 discretion on whether or not to ticket it.

We'll see how quickly they want police discretion, and human interaction, back into the equation when they each get 95 tickets in the 1st month.

Predictably, the first time a civilian worker is killed or beaten senseless: “Family of civilian worker filed suit, says cops should’ve handled this job”

My mother is a white shirt law enforcement officer so she doesn’t handle routine law enforcement issues although she has the authority too. I always joke with her when I’m in the car if we see someone run a light or something if she wants to cite them.

Her response every time is it would be totally irresponsible without a vest or gun as well as having a civilian in the car. She always reiterated how dangerous traffic stops have the potential to be. If Berkeley wants this, let them have it. They either learn a lesson or create a working model for the rest of us.

Im actually all for this...assuming the data is complete and unedited. Let them be the proving ground for all the unintended consequences

(But the cynic in me says the data will be much like...data on Cuba..."Castro's Cuba had 100% school attendance" )
