Paralympian Marieke Vervoort said when the day arrived, she had signed the euthanasia papers and was prepared to end her life.
That day came Tuesday in her native Belgium, her death confirmed in a statement from the city of Diest.

Vervoort, who was 40, won gold and silver medals in wheelchair racing at the 2012 London Paralympics, and two more medals three years ago in Rio de Janeiro. In an interview attended by The Associated Press at the Paralympics in Rio, Vervoort described living with unbroken pain from an incurable, degenerative spinal disease.

She talked of sleeping only 10 minutes some nights, described severe pain that caused others to pass out just watching her, and detailed how sports kept her alive."It's too hard for my body," Vervoort said in the 2016 interview. "Each training I'm suffering because of pain. Every race I train hard. Training and riding and doing competition are medicine for me. I push so hard — to push literally all my fear and everything away."

Should be legal to anyone over the age of 18 who has their own legal power of attorney.

Says the person who doesn’t suffer from a severely painful incurable spinal disorder.

This wasn’t some person who got a little sad and killed herself

I may call them a coward if they are leaving their family stranded because they gambled all of their money away, or something like that. But this case, or someone who just found out they are in early stages of dementia, etc., no man. I don’t think this girl was a coward.

She probably did not want to be dead. She just wanted to not be in pain. she had been suffering for years. it's selfish of those around her to expect her to keep suffering for them.

Shes a bigger person than you'll ever be. To sit there and go thru all that pain to realize the only way itll ever stop is with your last breath. Cant even do what you used to love because of nonstop pain. She made a big choice that nobody should have to. By no means is what she did cowardly

Man, I didn't want to have to think about that kind of thing today. I really do think I'd rather be dead than slowly lose my memory and grip on reality.

We put dogs down because it's humane to let them live through whatever ailment they may have, but like in this instance, some people are against it for human. Doesn't make sense.

I used to be against this but after watching my mom suffer for her final hours of battling cancer.... man nobody should have to go through that.

So, did she commit suicide or have someone else do the deed for her? The article is a bit unclear.

If she did it herself, I have no problem with it.

I do have a problem with asking someone else to kill you. There is no such thing as "assisted suicide." Suicide, by definition, means you took your own life. If someone else causes your death, then that, by definition, is NOT suicide.

If she could enjoy a glass of wine on her final night alive, then she had the ability to take the final steps herself.

Medical advances are occurring everyday. I'm shocked she had such little hope.

You never know what could've been discovered in 20 years.
