Never heard one correct somebody if they are called "Trooper". Call them "Police" or "officer" and they are wearing a hat? They'll probably correct you.

Every oilfield has a chemical "fingerprint" made up by the nature of the rocks it comes out of, the mix of plants and animals that went into it, the chemical processes that made it, etc. Since every oilfield has a different chemical makeup, some oilfields produce crudes that are easier and cheaper to refine with few unusable byproducts while others are more expensive to refine with lots of byproducts.
Sulfur in the oil is a big one. Some refineries can process it. Others can't. Crudes high in sulfur tend to be cheaper for the refinery to purchase, but they have to spend more money up front to install the equipment required to process it and do something with the sulfur byproduct. They literally can use almost any crude in the world, so there's more supply to meet their demand and they tend to enjoy being able to buy the cheapest crudes available. Other refineries, though, just don't have the equipment required to handle high sulfur crudes, so they literally cannot run some crudes through their refinery. Since there's less supply that can meet their demand, the price of what they can use is driven upward and they tend to have to buy the more expensive grades of crude to run through their refineries.
Because of that chemical variability in crude oils, the world trades crude and sets prices based on the rough geographic area where it comes from since there is less variation in crudes from a particular region than there will be between crudes from two wildly different parts of the planet. North American oil tends to peg its price to West Texas Intermediate Crude, which is a grade of crude that comes from... WEST TEXAS! Brent Crude refers to crudes that come from mainly Europe around the North Sea and places up near the Arctic Circle because the first major find there was the Brent oilfield. There is also Dubai crude, which is the third major global benchmark.
Basically, these benchmarks are a way to roughly know the characteristics of what you're buying by grouping similar crude oils together into one benchmark which is usually named after the first oilfield found, the largest one in the area, etc.
