Had to have a stint put in my widow maker at 41. After lots of blood work, and test the only thing they could tell me is that it was probably due to my family history. Never been over weight in my life, physically active, and eat good. Just got dealt a bad hand of cards.

Like the OP says... Make sure you're getting regular check ups.

How high was your cholesterol

I hate all the cholesterol stuff. I've been on Pravastatin with a total cholesterol (medicated) of just over 145. Because my LDL was over 70 my doc changed my meds to Crestor. Week after next I find out if I drop below the magic 70 for LDL. Doc said recent research indicates lower is better for Cholesterol to the extent that 145 may be too high. For those of you with a total cholesterol of 200, you are doomed.

I just got back from a vacation to Iceland where I hiked up and down the mountains and on long treks to the waterfalls. I guess I'm lucky I didn't blow a plaque and seize up and check out.

Reading this thread makes me worried because I have terrible insurance which discourages you to use it with $10,000 deductible (70/30 co-insurance), $13,500 max out of pocket. I have a family of 4 and if anyone of us has something major in back to back years we are fricked.

I need to find a new job with better insurance.

My doctor scheduled a stress test. I showed up, they said "that'll be $3500".
I said "I pay over six thousand a year for insurance, why isn't this covered" said I had to meet deductible first.
Had my wife take out a half million dollar life insurance policy on me and canceled my health insurance and set up a DNR.
No need for retirement savings either.
Win, win.

You are brave and already have come to grips with your mortality. When my doc prescribed new meds to lower cholesterol I asked what the goal was? Was it to reduce my risk for heart disease so I can sit in assisted living with dementia till I'm 90? I'd rather just go when it's time. DNR

I agree with the sentiment of going to see the doctor when you feel something's wrong but all too often we lean on the medical industry to help fix problems that could have been easily prevented with a little bit of self-control. I agree with the previous downvoted poster who said just take better care of yourself, don't just rely on doctors to save your life after you've fricked it up. Half our country is ruining their lives and driving up health insurance rates for everyone else in the country because they'd rather drink soda and eat burgers every meal and not move around at all..

Some of what you post is true but the stuff above is a red herring or straw man. Don't worry about half of the country who is running up your health care costs. Remember in January 2021 you will not only be paying for our poor health choices but you will be paying for the health care costs of illegal aliens per the democrats. We all gonna pay!

Does anyone know if it’s true that jerking off is good for your prostate? I’m too embarrassed to ask my doctor.

You are not fricked if cholesterol is over 200. Triglycerides are a better gauge for health over cholesterol. Cholesterol has been seriously overblown and statins are over prescribed.

That's not what my doctor said, hence I'm on new medication. I'm about sick of all of this.

First, LDL had to be below 100. Done. Now has to be below 70. We'll see. I don't remember about my triglycerides. Think they have always been normal. Incidentally, a cardiologist told me that a lot of cardiologists take anti-cholesterol meds as a preventative measure. Even with no indications of abnormalities. This Cardio had a coronary calcium score of 0. Mine was 5 and the cardio said that was good. But my PCP said it is an indication of some "cardiovascular disease". I tend to want to go with what the cardiologist said. I got one of those $150 multi CAT/Ultrasonic screenings.

Definitely agree with this. I am in my early 30’s, eat pretty well and exercise regularly. My dad had a heart attack when he was 40 and so did his twin brother when he was 56, so there are some issues in my genetics. I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol at my check up a year ago. Really scared me so I started watching what I ate and kept on exercising more. Went to my annual this year and mentioned family history to the doctor and she had me do an EKG which came back slightly irregular. Then did a stress test that showed no issues. I have a beautiful wife and toddler that I need to be around for, so I plan on getting stress tests done regularly. I was really nervous to ask the doctor about my heart at first because I was afraid of what the answer would be. Very glad I did though.

OP, glad you went to the doc and that it saved your life.

Stations have a “plaque stabilization “ quality apparently. So even if you have a great LDL below 70, it’s prescribed after a CVA, MI, etc.

Not necessarily
I was listening to a conversation between my wife and one of her friends earlier today. Both are RNs in their 70s, who worked for about fifty years in the nursing profession. My wife had a career in coronary and intensive care, the friend spent time there as well. She has a cholesterol problem. She kept records of patients who had suffered hear attacks and "most did no have high cholesterol" levels.
Genetics dictates lifespan over lifestyle, IMO.
I agree though, we all need to get our checkups. Never know when a cancer is starting. You don't want to wait too late.
I had some suspicious symptoms for prostate cancer a couple years ago. Called my Urologist. He looked inside me and saw nothing. Took a biopsy which was positive. Ugh! He and a radiologist did what is called Brachy Therapy. So far all is well at this time.
