See Jackson Zoo and move it. Jackson's 100+ year old zoo is located in a area where there hasn't been a single tax paying white resident in 20-25 years.

The Tulsa zoo is in North Tulsa which isn't the best, but the zoo is pretty decent. I think it is all in how it is managed, or at least that has a lot to do with it. I wasn't impressed with the BR zoo the last time I was there 3/4 years ago, and I figure it is only getting better

We need a study to determine if relocation is feasible

We need an environmental impact study performed to determine the detrimental impact to race relations in the current zoo area if the zoo is moved

Oh so you saying the zoo sucks cause it’s in a predominantly black neighborhood?

I believe he's saying that the animals that are outside the zoo are keeping people away from seeing the animals inside the zoo! You're welcome.

He actually said two things.

First he said we need a destination zoo we could all be proud of.

Then he said the zoo was in a bad location.

Those are two entirely different issues, and those following the zoo debate saw how BREC let the zoo decline until it finally lost accreditation. Few think that issue was ever resolved and that letting BREC start over with a new zoo will suddenly make BREC a better zookeeper.

The location of the zoo is a political football that is masking BREC's management issues. A new zoo location will not make BREC a better zookeeper either.

its racist to move it out of the slums and high crime war zone

I love how posters on this site make it seem like you have to walk through the projects and duck gunfire just to get the giraffe exhibit

Just go to NOLA. Our area cannot support two major zoos. Most people only go once a year, so we are lucky to even have NOLA.

The zoo is nice, but tourists only go to Baton Rouge for LSU games.

I agree. But it’s a dead issue.

Accompanied my daughter on a field trip to the zoo. The grounds are decent enough and the crowds are low, but I couldn’t help but wish that we had a destination zoo that the greater Baton Rouge area could be proud of. I believe location is the key to such low crowds and turnout.

Location has nothing to do with turnout. I drive to NOLA to go to the zoo. BREC let it go to complete crap in an effort to try and move it. If BREC invested in it then it would be a zoo Baton Rouge could be proud of...key word Baton Rouge.

It is an attraction. People are willing to drive to an attraction and actually the drive isn't that bad. But people are not going to drive to see a place that has not been maintained and let go.

Anyone who has actually driven to the zoo from BR knows it actually isn't in a bad area and you never feel unsafe. The drive actually isn't that bad as far as traffic goes.

I love how people complain about the drive to the zoo then say they want it in South BR. If you have ever been in traffic in South BR in morning or afternoon then you know this is a dumb idea. If you are not moving it to City Park then moving it from currently location is dumb.

Not to mention how expensive property investment is in South BR.
