Why tf do we even need a damn zoo? Just close the damn thing. If I’m spending money to go to a zoo then I’m driving down the interstate to NOLA to go to the Audubon Zoo. Much nicer and is kept up a whole lot better than the BR zoo. The BR zoo sucks arse and it’s in a god awful location. We have more things to worry about in BR than a damn zoo

I remember Gary was always pushing for the zoo to stay when the vote was happening.

Has he ever even been?

Honestly, most zoos are in really shitty parts of town and I just don't understand it. smart move would be to buy some property outside of town in the direction that the town is growing and plant the zoo there. That way, in 50 years, it would still be in a decent area.

No guarantee at all of that. When the BR zoo was built it was a great location, and BR was expanding in that direction. It may be difficult to believe, but NBR was once a great place to live. New business were constantly opening on PLank road, and moving North, I think the first Toyota dealership in BR opened on Plank road. White flight from the area started, and in less the 50 years the area became what it is today. Not really relevant, but as a example of how the town has changed in the early 1970s I would walk with friends from the Pastime down highland road back to LSU at 2:00AM and think nothing of it.

They could expand the zoo by just fencing off NBR.

Where are you going to put the zoo in East Baton Rouge Parish in an area that does not flood?

When the zoo was built the Baker/ Brownsfield was a white middle class working town, I-110 was just finished being built, and most important part is the zoo property did not flood.

One of the first McDonald’s in BR was built on Plank Road before Airline Hwy. This area was booming back then Burger Chef, Howard Bros, McClouds appliances, bowling alley, Kroger, and Wolof.

Brec had a daycare at the park building off Monte Santo Park.

A few car dealers were on Senic Hwy.

My hippie mom was civically into stuff and went house to house to ask people to sign a petition to get a post office and library at Delmont Village. She made me walk with her to help her get the petition signed which means I contributed to her hippie event. After we moved out they put a post office and library at Delmont village.

Good gossip from 1960’s.
The hippie lady next door to us played a ho ho ho year round by sleeping with BRPD traffic cop shooting radar on our street. Then my father told me she was super hot and was a huge swinger chick that liked trains.

I tend to agree. Appears to be an obvious budget cut. Perhaps still open because of connection with LSU vet school

Instead we’re going to pay 100 million dollars to upgrade the existing zoo & also going to spend 50 million dollars revamping the park near it as an apology to racebaiters for considering moving the zoo to the fairgrounds.

Yeah, they tried that and Chauna Banks lost her shite over the potential of jobs leaving NBR / Baker.

I don’t think they necessarily need a whole new zoo but they definitely need new management and improved exhibits.

Houston Zoo is nice. Right by the Medical center and Hermann Park.

Just saying.

I agree, they do a great job with it. We only go a few times a year but enjoy the new exhibits and it's clean and the animals are well taken care of.

St. George zoo?

That's exactly where they proposed to move it. The BREC Fair grounds on Airline by Bayou Manchac. The kind folks in Santa Maria threw a hissy fit to not have it across the bayou from them because of the smells and noise.
