Baton Rouge might have to return $750,000 federal grant(SWB again)

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The rush by East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome's administration to buy body cameras for every Baton Rouge police officer may mean the city will lose $750,000. Now, they're scrambling to try to keep that money from heading back to the federal government.
All Baton Rouge police officers are now equipped with a body camera, but there's a question about whether the city took full advantage of federal money available to help buy those cameras.
Back in February, Stephen Maberry of LSU wrote the grant on behalf of the city and BRPD, requesting $750,000 from the federal government for body cameras for the department. "The federal funds, along with the match, would have allowed every officer to have a body camera with an additional 40 or so for maintenance purposes," said Maberry.LINK

Saw that, so she blew 750k because she rushed a decision instead of waiting for the outcome

It’s a shame that I’m not surprised one bit at this. The level of incompetence from Broome down through her administration is unprecedented.
I wonder how many times Graves has been in a meeting with her, holding back how he really feels

You have to wonder if it's pushing him to run for Governor to get some real power so he can really frick SWB up instead of nothing he has as a house representative in DC.

I love how this administration treats federal funds like they just fall from the sky and is Free Money. I got news Madam Mayor, that’s MY MONEY. I pay taxes and am sick and tired of her squandering it.

She didn't squander this. She f-ed getting before she could squander it. While stupid/incompetent/crooked politicians are more the rule than the exception in this state, she is setting a new bar. The Baton Rouge voters that stayed home and let her win by a few busloads of votes should flogged.

I mean, this is not the 1st time BR has been on the hook to have to give back federal funds.

Well it's not the federal funds she squandered it is your local tax which to me is more precious.
And Broome is an idiot - hopefully this city takes note and replaces her after 1 term.

Did she mention the pending grant request to the metro council when she asked for the money from general funds?
Can she do anything right?
She cost the tax payers 750k for her impatience & ignorance.

This is almost as dumb as releasing the names of the confidential informants working with BRPD through the BRAVE program.
Actually I don't think it's that dumb. I don't think she'll ever top that.

I also doubt SWB finishes her first term.
Could Holden run again?

SWB signs form for body camera grant then says we didn't do that this year. Grant specifically says money can't be used to reimburse BR for cameras already purchased, SWB says we don't know that yet.

Cameras cost over 2 million dollars.
They also budgeted 845K for maintenance of the cameras in the current budget. They are spending all this money and none of it really makes us safer.
Now they want to pass a big property tax to hire more cops and to raise police pay. I'm all for that, but shouldn't we have enough money to fully fund our police department without raising taxes? This is crazy. It's as if we are squandering our regular funds on cameras, body cams, gunshot detectors, bike paths, downtown greenway, etc. and neglecting the police force itself.

If Kennedy ran and won, he would probably nominate Graves for his Senate seat.
I think Garret is more effective in congress right now, at least until JBE or an elected Kennedy is term limited.

Someone could go look this up. Pretty sure they are limited to three consecutive terms.

Why would anyone want to live in Baton Rouge.... besides LSU

Guess she couldn't figure out how to embezzle the money in time.

Yes he can run again but she will finish her term and run again. What makes you think she won't finish her first term?

That pretty much sums up any thread about a local EBR issue.

Because I make more money in this city than you will ever dream about in Sugarland Junior. That's why.
