The East Baton Rouge Parish Council on Aging today announced it has purchased a 2.8 acre property on North 18th Street for its Meals on Wheels and senior center hot meals services.
The property will be the site of a new 25,000-square-foot facility for preparing home-delivered meals as well as hot meals that are delivered to the 26 senior centers and meal sites across the parish.
The new building will have a commercial kitchen and meal packing facility, and parking space for agency’s fleet of Meals on Wheels vans and administrative offices for more than 60 employees.
The Council on Aging has been housed at its 5790 Florida Blvd. headquarters for over 30 years. It’s unclear if the agency will be moving its headquarters to the North 18th Street property, and council officials could not be reached for comment before this afternoon’s deadline.

don't you know someone's brother already has a building permit ready to go.

I agree with their stated mission, but don't trust any administrator at that organization to not be self-serving and corrupt.
I'd never support a tax dedicated to COA's funding.

Un fricking believable that a private organization is buying property and building permanent structures with my tax dollars that will be their private property.
I would have been OK with this organization being tax exempt or even getting some tax credits for doing work. But giving them tax funding without oversight is insane.

you hear about cush jobs and sweet gigs, but the COA is by far the cushiest and sweetest in BR, and it's not close.

Whatever happened with the frickery surrounding that facility they renovated around Florida Blvd to use as a bingo hall?

How many COA employees does it take to change a light bulb?
10, 1 to do it and 9 more to collect a check for it.

Isn't the Tax approved for 10 years (less now)? Would Leasing be a better option?

The idea is to lock in all kinds of shite then say “We’ll lose XYZ for seniors if you cut the tax!”
Best plan, IMHO, is to cut the tax and buy the property off them at the sheriff sale and let another group do the work instead.
