It was Harrah's(New Orleans land based 'casina') and licenses for boats not in Baton Rouge.
It used to suck when you were out of money, drunk and stuck on the boat sailing down the river

Was Harrah's the one that bribed Edwards or was that one of the boats? The Indian casinos are on reservations so they don't count.

Wrong..it was the last license that went to the Treasure Chest

Old enough to know what happened. The casino funding trick was the all time bait and switch. What they told Us was that the casino revenues would go straight to education.
Awesome.
The first session after the funds rolled in, the legislature cut all the other funding that traditionally went to education. Net zero gain for education. Lots of extra General Fund money for the legislators to spend on their friends. frickers.

I went Saturday night to the Ameristar in Vicksburg you stand in front of a machine that takes your temperature. The guy in front of me stands there and it reads 101.8 I said hey man he needs to go WTF. SECURITY Tells him to do it again, this time it is 100.8. I'm like how many times man I'm leaving this is bullshite! Security tells him do it again 98.8 and told him to come on. I was pissed I told security guard that was bullshite, went and found a supervisor he said he should not have let him in. I told him that was bullshite and left ! And 6 foot rule is complete BS at first it was not now ! If I owned a bar or church or any business! They should sue whoever you sue because it ain't Right

Maybe you also didn't realize what those specific tax revenues are used for.
Mom and pop sales taxes aren't triangulated to political pockets. Casino revenues surely are.

I can name 2 that would have done infinitely better.
David Vitter
Ralph Abraham
And 1 that probably would have bumbled through it similarlg
Eddie Rispone
I went to the Trump rally in Monroe in November. Had to cover it, so was there from the beginning. Saw everybody speak. And Rispone was far and away the absolute worst one that walked up on that stage. It was embarrassing that he was the nominee.

Former Gov. Edwin Edwards met with casino owner Robert Guidry in a Baton Rouge hotel room in 1994 and agreed to help Guidry get a state gambling license after Guidry promised an Edwards aide $100,000 monthly, Guidry testified Friday.
He was on the witness stand in the federal racketeering trial of Edwards, Edwards' son Stephen, and his former aide Andrew Martin, all accused in a bribery and extortion plot involving riverboat casino licenses. State Sen. Greg Tarver, state gambling board member Ecotry Fuller, cattleman Cecil Brown and Baton Rouge businessman Bobby Johnson also are defendants.
Guidry, a former owner of the Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, told jurors that Martin arranged for Edwards' help in obtaining the license.
Martin first demanded 3 percent of the profits of the Treasure Chest to be divided equally with Edwin and Stephen Edwards, claimed Guidry, who testified under a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.
Guidry said he balked at that figure, estimating it would cost him $120,000 a month. Instead he agreed to a flat $100,000 monthly payment.
Edwards agreed to help Guidry in a 1994 meeting at the Baton Rouge Hilton, Guidry said.
"He said 'You and Andrew got an understanding?' I said, 'That's right,"' Guidry testified.
Guidry said he assured Edwards that he had the finances for his riverboat all worked out. "He (Edwards) said 'Well, fine. I'm going to see about getting you a hearing."'
Guidry said his lawyer had earlier advised him that he would not get a crucial hearing from Louisiana State Police on his license because he had been involved in a video poker business with reputed organized crime figure Frank Caracci.
That, Guidry said, led him to ask for help from Martin, whose boss, Edwards, appointed the head of state police.
quote:
On Oct. 16, 1998, Guidry pleaded guilty to an extortion charge for paying the Edwardses and Martin a total of $1.5 million to ensure state approval of his riverboat casino. Guidry was fined $3.5 million. He faces up to five years in prison but could get less because he is cooperating with investigators.
Guidry's testimony came a day after former Edwards aide Sid Moreland testified that Edwards once privately acknowledged helping Guidry get a license as a favor to Martin.

Don't the casinos operate under different laws since they're on a boat? The whole reason they have to be on boats in the first place is because gambling is still against the law on land.
You’re going to be shocked when you realize it’s 2020
