Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – In an effort to provide a satisfactory Memorial Day weekend for our incoming guests, Gulf State Park is undertaking a cleanup of the Sargassum seaweed in front of beach access locations where beachgoers concentrate. Please be cautious while the equipment is being operated on the beach.

These areas include the Gulf State Park Pavilion, Romar Beach Access, Cotton Bayou Beach Access, Alabama Point and the shell parking lot access east of the Perdido Pass Bridge. The city of Orange Beach is helping with the Sargassum “as much as we can” according to Coastal Resources Director Phillip West.

In Gulf Shores, Public Works Director Noel Hand said there is plenty on the beaches there as well and still coming in. He said the city is evaluating the situation.

“While we work hard to clean the shorelines, please keep in mind that the seaweed is still present in the water and continuously washing ashore,” a park social media post states.

The seaweed will only be removed in front of beach access areas, as it is a natural occurrence that renourishes the beach and provides further stability for our sand dunes.

And it stinks to high heaven when it is rotting.

Hopefully it'll be gone by the time I go in July.

It's a problem at beaches from Alabama to Mexico - even as far as Tulum, MX. I have a trip planned out there in July and it looks like 90% of the beaches will be unusable. Doesn't look like it will let up until September or later.

Cause FYI:

Scientists chalk the explosive growth up to increased runoff of agricultural inputs and sewage from the Amazon River in Brazil as well as warming water temperatures and upwelling in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

I’ve never seen it that bad or this early in the year. We always plan out beach trip to the redneck riviera the week after the kids get out of school to avoid this shite, and the hurricanes. Plus it’s usually Not so miserably hot.

Looks like our vacation next week just got a whole lot more expensive!! Water parks, The Track, and arcades are gonna be crowded as frick, and costly at the same time!!

Sorry.. I’m not the true OT baller that can afford to go to Monaco or the French Riviera on private yachts, and G6 planes for our vacations.

Just sucks that this had to happen so early in the year, and potentially screw up our one big vacation of the year.
