The fact that you think this payout is somehow related to what the police did or didn't do just cements your position as the biggest dumbass on TD.

I'm not excusing the officers' negligence. From a valuation standpoint, $6.4 million is too much.
The settlement says, "Hey, black people! Look! We're not racist! Please don't riot again!"

You're right. The city just decided to pay 6.4 mil to help out the poor.
And to add, the police chief admitted to not following procedures for transport and getting him medical attention.

They will riot again, once those officers are either convicted on much lesser charges or just let go completely, that city will burn again.

Or maybe if a sporting team wins a championship

They'll be broke in 18 months

The article lists payouts from other settlements. It shows how pr and fear can affect typical valuation.

Since you have it figured out, what did they do?

would love to see an unscripted gray family reality show after they get some cash.

1. I'm sure the settlement is one with no admission of liability
2. The number is high, especially for someone who I'm certain had very little in the way of a future economic loss claim.
That said, the Mayor and DA immediately and vocally took the side of the victim, so I'm sure they pushed for a big civil settlement ASAP. Now that could be because the facts are pretty damning to civil defense of the police dept., but I suspect this settlement has much more to do with political reasons than anything else. What the frick does the mayor and city council care? It's not "their" money.

It was probably the black cop that killed him, considering statistically black on black violence far out paces anything whitey does
Knowing a black cop did this, does that allow you to sleep better?

After attorney fees and taxes, they will burn through what's left of that settlement so fast and be dead broke once again.

Police chief said they left him unsecured in the back of the van while shackled. Against protocol. Police chief said the officers refused him medical attention timely. Against protocol. Both played a large role in his death. Chief was honest, which helped seal the large settlement. Of course maybe the cops did no wrong and the chief is ust lying. Right?
