Back Pain - Sciatic Nerve
Posted on 10/8/15 at 10:02 am

I've been having lover back pain, that seems to stretch down my left leg. Hurts when I sit (mostly driving). Feels ok when Im standing of laying down on my back. I am able to play soccer games with no issue, but hurts afterwards.
I did some googling and found that it appears to be my Sciatic Nerve. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this issue, or how long it might last.

It inexplicably appears and several months later it inexplicably goes away.

May want to visit a spine doctor for the root cause. Highly likely that its a disc impingement or herniation. Just went through this problem and my L5-S1 disc is practically non-existent. An MRI is needed to make a complete diagnosis.

Lay on your back and pull your thigh straight up to your chest with the hand from that side, then take your other hand and pull that foot across your body. Repeat for the other side. Should stretch it out well enough for the pain to go away.
Caveat: I've never had a day of medical training in my life.

If it is that nerve, it is probably from years of sitting on a wallet. My old man has had this problem for years. Says it is very painful. I think the doctor has told him to sit on a tennis ball (idk how that is supposed to help).

you have a herniated disc in L5 S1.
go do an mri
good luck.
had the surgery years ago. I was lucky. it worked.

I have the same issue. I have a bulging L5S1 vertebrae. Went to PT and learned some exercises to help coax the disc back into place. I also now use lumbar support in my office chair
I play a ton of sports and have found it best to stretch my hip risers and lower back every time I play.

I try to stretch my leg and use a lot of ice to numb the area of pain...no heat, just ice

you need to stretch a lot more.

Googly a bunch of stretches. Most are common sense. One that you probably didn't know about (But will grow to love) is your psoas. These are the secret back fricker uppers that most don't know exist muchless how to stretch them.
In a sentence, it's similar to a hip flexor but the muscle you're trying to target goes through your pelvis to your lower back. They are constantly pulling on your back and on the surface it's hard for most people to visualize how stretching the front of your leg will relieve stress on the back.

Same here exactly. 15 years ago. All good. Just some 'tight days' and occasionally left leg pain. My biggest gripe is nerve damage that causes calf strains far more than most people suffer.

find a professional massager
you will also need to walk 20 min a day
leg lifts, jumping jacks and stretching
AND remove that wallet, and never put it back...when young you can get away with it...for a while

I have the same problem, mine tends to get worse if I have a day where I lay around the house. When I am busy at work and on my feet all day it is less of an issue. However, once it flares up it can bother me for weeks no matter what I do. Stretching and a hot bath usually help. Since mine has been ongoing for so long I should probably go see a doctor because there is likely a root cause that can be dealt with. Maybe you should do the same.

agree with the wallet.
see an ortho, get an xray first before MRI (cheaper). If your disc is only "bulging" and NOT fully herniated you can possibly fix this without surgery.
Youtube has some great videos demonstrating the PT exercises I used to help my back pain.
If you sit in a chair for work, def get the lumbar support and be sure to get up and walk every 20-30 minutes

I had in injury in my 20's and had this bad. Like driving a scooter at the supermarket bad. I was 5'11-165 lbs, in great shape, and every step was agony. My physician prescribed physical therapy and rest. The more therapy I did and the more I rested, the worse it got.
So I ate half a hydrocodone and went for a excruciatingly painful walk. The next day I doubled up the walk and skipped the pain medication. Within two weeks I was running stairs. I literally walked/ran/exercised my way out of it.
Twenty years later I still get flair ups. When it happens I stretch, lay on the floor and get a shite load of exercise. I find that sitting in a bad chair or couch is the worst possible thing as well as when I get sick and have to stay in bed. I'd tell you to stretch and move as much as possible before seeking medical help.
Good luck.

I had similar problems and it turned out to be what's called Piriformis Syndrome. It's impingement of the sciatic nerve due to compression by the piriformis muscle. It mimics the symptoms of sciatica that's caused my spinal compression.
