Interesting tidbit: When Vivian Vance played Ethel Mertz on "I Love Lucy" her contract had the stipulation she had to be at least 15 lbs. heavier than Lucille Ball so Lucy would be fitter on the show.
Also, Vance was not particularly happy that William Frawley was chosen to play her husband since there was a 22-year age difference between them.

I recall reading somewhere that for the first few years Vivian Vance couldn't wear makeup. I assume that meant beyond anything required for the camera.

She couldnt wear the more glamorous makeup that Lucy did - fake eyelashes, blush, ect. She also wore clothes slightly too small and had her hair done so that it looked like her roots were always showing.
Lucy wasn't thrilled with Vance's casting. Ethel was supposed to be much older (Vivian was only two years older), and it caused some tension at first. Lucy and Vivian soon became good friends and worked together on many of Lucy's shows.
