Average cost for a wedding photographer?

About to start shopping around and was wondering what wedding photographers usually charge

Depends on the various packages they offer, I've seen them from $500 up northwards of $3,000.
Hopefully you're in a city or town where you have multiple options.

A lot. I'd say 4k is average around Louisiana. You can definitely get lower than that though.

My wedding was a few months ago and it cost us $3,500. This was about an hour north of DC though.

Our guy in Nola was about $4500, but we got the biggest package and added a couple extras. Was worth every penny IMO. The day went by so fast, having good pics really helped remember it all.
Our guy was also great with our guests. He did a friend of mine's wedding years ago, and we loved him so much we got his card that night.

the range is from $500 (some housewife who bought a DSLR) and $5k, someone with multiple shooters and knows what they are doing
our guy was $5k (Mark Eric) and is one of the best in the business, but I think he is more expenisve now...he has gotten huge

Average is probably around 3 but you can find someone who is good for half that if you dig around. It is usually someone that is relatively new on the scene.

3-5 k and you really want higher end or you are going to end up with ugly pictures.

This. Key thing is to know what pictures you want of the bridal party and at the reception. The experienced guys know this and get the pics done very quickly after the wedding. The inexperienced do not but if you give them a list they can do it just fine.
