Bigtime waste of money. Should put at least half of that down on a house.

You think a car is a bad investment, a wedding is worth ZERO the next day. At least a car depreciates over time.

Some people really must be in love with themselves to write some of those checks.

$5K for a very small reception for my daughter when she got married.
$20K down payment on the house they bought shortly afterwards.

It's a blessed event.

It's a wonderful family event, a gathering to celebrate love and commitment, before God.

Marriage is an important sacrament, and is referenced in the Bible multiple times.

I've never regretted a penny I've spent on weddings and the memories are more precious than gold

I have made the executive decision not to have a wedding. SO and I are going to elope and spend the wedding money on a nice honeymoon. I have not informed him of this yet but hope he has no objection. I may have to bribe him with a new rifle to get him to agree. He actually goes to weddings. I pretend to have explosive diarrhea and stay home.

Son got married almost two years ago at a nice little venue in a swamp setting north of Lake Arthur. Open bar and a decent food spread. I think I dropped less than 10K including rehearsal dinner, tux rental, and honeymoon in Tennessee.

This is especially troublesome since most households can't afford to pay cash for a new set of tires.

Probably thousands of dollars put on credit cards so their daughter has the perfect Facebook photos.

Does that count people going to NOLA from out of town?

I have friends that live in Houston that got married at a catholic church in New Orleans.

Think my 3 totaled about 10k max. The divorces however are 6 figures.

I’d love to see the average cost of weddings in the MS Delta among white people.

Delta weddings are a cultural thing here and it’s insane what we spend. Usually the receptions are open to whoever wants to come and will be at a rented out cotton gin, old antebellum house, etc with open bars, live bands, all kinds of stuff. Sometimes hundreds of people will attend. They’ll have rented limos or party buses to pick people up, take them home. I know several farmers whose daughters wedding cost them 100k or more

You can barely have a typical south Louisiana, nice, open bar, live music, big meal wedding for under 100k.

Sucker.

Imagine a couple getting married at the age of 25. Let's say they stay together at least until retirement at 65. That's 40 years. At 8% interest compounded daily for 40 years, that $100k would be $2,352,392.98 on their retirement date. And that's only that one single investment, not what all they might save along the way on their own, or inherit from you when you keel over.

In 1999, my bar tab for the wedding alone was just over $25k.

The one that surprised me is W. Virginia. I figured it would be about $200.

You forgot that a West Virginia wedding is also known as a family reunion so they would be paying for both.

I hated my wedding and told my wife that and never let her forget how little she means to me and then I got fat and continued my spiral into alcoholism while refusing to talk to her or spend any real time with her other than the occasional date night I reluctantly went on and complained about the whole time while on my phone. No idea why the marriage didn’t work out. Women are insane and it’s not worth it. I’m happier now that I’m alone and my mom does my laundry. -The OT

This is so damn awesome!! How many here are willing to raise their hand and admit that this is their current life. LOL
