Good luck raising a family in nola for 65k.

I'd imagine most of those workers are either single or part of two adult, two income households.

I know several single people living in New Orleans that are happy and making $60k. They definitely had to spend time shopping for a decent place to live, but they go out to eat and don't live above their means

They do... but they require less of it due to their lower required standard of living. So it depresses wages (in the eyes of Americans who want to get paid more for less)

Its garbage pay for the work. Why take $65k to work in NOLA when you can make $80k in Houston or Dallas?

NOLA is the one bright spot when it comes to the shite Louisiana economy. When I talk to people there, they sound blissfully ignorant to the troubles the rest of the state is dealing with.

Probably because they're worried about the infrastructure failing again for an average Summer downpour. Or when the next boil water notice comes out. Or the fact that NOPD won't show up unless someone is severely injured.

As anyone remotely familiar with the city knows, New Orleans has been in a steady and quickening decline for over a century. Didnt get real bad until the 1970s or so. Through about the 1950s it was more than just the 3rd world tourist economy it is today. A handful of low paying "tech jobs" aren't going to save it, either. Especially since it's current status as a "cool" city for Leftwing rich people and transient hipsters has been declining. But not before they ran any inkling of authentic New Orleans culture from the place (some still exists in Mid City).

But it is true that many in New Orleans are clueless to how bad things are there. It is a strange denial that exists. A proud embrace of ignorance, I suppose about pride or something. I had it for a little while myself.

I don't deny that, but Nola is in a better place today than it has been in the past 30 to 40 years. They can't keep up with demand despite building condos all over the place. Nearly every neighborhood other than the East and 9th ward has major housing renovations and construction going on. For some reason, people want to live in Nola.

And yes it still has a ton of problems. Nobody would deny that.

Yes. DXC is a H1B shop. I work for them; currently managing a project with 2 indians(dot) and a korean. My main job is to translate and fix their mistakes. It keeps me vv busy. I bet NOLA DXC will be 15% local talent tops.

I found that curious too

Lake Charles has by far the best economy in the state right now. Nola and BR have been growing slowly. Laffy has been in the dump because of oil. I don't really keep up with North LA much.

No, but it's better than nothing. Even in the worst case of a lot of H1B employees.

I'm so tired of the authenticity argument. Transplants are good and bad, but the city needs new blood to move forward.

Every state, including Texas, uses huge incentives to compete for jobs. I'm not really sure what the proper alternative would be.

Besides depressing wages and hurting locals. Outside of the top hires that go to Google, MS, Apple, etc. Most H1B's suck! shite skills, shite language barriers, shite experience for the end users. Its just another form of globalization forced upon us.

Strictly by economic growth? Sure. But it depends on the type of employment. New Orleans sucks but it's far better than Lake Charles when it comes to IT. That's a low bar, but still

What do you think that is? The article is, of course, completely vague on it.

the problem is LA. LA can only afford these credits if they spur long-term investment. things that are portable (movies, IT, etc) are long-term losers. it's a Louisiana problem. with our demographic issues, we are trying to put the cart before the horse and that's just not sustainable. we have to target giving better "low" jobs to build our economy from the ground
