Because that's not really what's happening. They are using your tax dollars to bring in H1B employees with no real benefit to the state
Just tell them to pack up and leave then. Oil and gas being the only industry is working well anyway.

I work in IT and that's well below market value for those jobs. I realize that it's decent based on a national scale but IT pays pretty well in most cases.
I'm not really talking about desktop support/help desk type of jobs.

Again, so you're saying the state should say frick it, nevermind we don't want those jobs? Keep em in Texas we're better off without them

It's the Louisiana way and part of the "it'll never work" mantra that pervades in the state......They aren't happy with the tech jobs, they aren't happy with tourism jobs....they aren't happy with jobs provided by the film industry........
They are happy with oil and gas jobs that tend to disappear every 3-5 years when the price goes down and those people are screwed end up declaring bankruptcy. have homes foreclosed on and cars repossessed. Also don't need much of a brain in your head for the majority of the O&G jobs

That is exactly the play. Has been at every one of these big tech announcements around the state. They announce a bunch of jobs with way below market salaries and bring in the H1B1s when they cant fill the positions.
So you are saying that every one of these positions will be filled with H1B1's?

Of course not, but the salaries are deliberately held below market value because the jobs are almost exclusively in the bottom tier of the IT sector.

I'm not saying it's a negative but in many cases, as with DXC, the city had to bribe the company to come with tax incentives to create jobs with pay scales that will only attract Indian immigrants and maybe a few college grads.
Simply pointing out that it's probably not natural, organic growth with market pay. Definitely not a negative unless the state doesn't recoup the tax incentives which I assume is what brought them here. If not I stand corrected.

Indian immigrants are generally nice, hard working, family oriented, and raise their kids to be successful. Who has a problem with that?

I don't know what the answer is to be honest. It's going to be difficult to keep your good talent in state for $65,000 when you can go to Houston and get 50-100% more in salary with no state income taxes. I know because I just made that exact move.

It's basically just opening the door to hire a bunch of H1B1 employees after they "can't find local talent".
On the plus side, New Orleans will finally get some great Indian restaurants!

I have hiring input in my department and I'd get laughed at if I offered a candidate with 5+ years of experience 65k. And that's in BR which is a cheaper place to live than Nola.

I find it hilarious that there are no public or tech jobs in the entire state, and they actually get some that pay pretty well and people still bitch about it.
Its garbage pay for the work. Why take $65k to work in NOLA when you can make $80k in Houston or Dallas?

Then will be laid off in a year. Satellite tech offices are more volatile than the oil field.

So? That's how you get national businesses to come to places. It's a biding war out there.....look, if you are happy with hotel and bar jobs just say it .

You want to be competitive or you just ant to hold to some purity of market economics a la Milton Friedman or Hayek......this is how economic development works ...in the real world

Yep.
Also I would like to think that some of these people could gain valuable experience and move onto other tech jobs in the city. So this may help other companies find good employees in a region lacking in people with these skills

Anything to help the economy diversify from Oil and Gas is a good thing.
