So if I read your posts correctly, your solution should be do nothing, hope something happens and bitch about the lack of economic diversity when nothing happens because our politicians did nothing to make it happen?
You suffer from the Louisiana disorder "that'll never work" syndrome..... I'm really not sure what you mean from the ground up, it sounds like a self serving and patronizing stance.
Are you saying we should pass on 65K jobs in favor of 35K jobs because those jobs are .....um......"organic"????

Good luck raising a family in nola for 65k.
Depends on what your standards are. If you expect to live lavishly then no that's not so great. As long as you don't live beyond your means it can most certainly be done. Most families are dual income now anyway so even if the wife only makes 40k a year that still puts the household income at over six figures before taxes. They're doing better than a lot of Americans if that's the case.
Maybe living in a nice area of the city is a little steep but there are affordable neighborhoods in Jefferson, St. Tammany, Plaquemines, St. Charles, and St. John.

The 65k will be fine for fresh out of school hires to get some experience but software devs and architect with more than a few years will be able to get paid considerably more in markets like Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, etc.... They'll be able to recruit fresh grads from LSU, ULL, Southeastern, etc... but after 2 or 3 years they're going to want more $ and they're likely to get it if they're willing to make a move.

i don't know if there is anything worthwhile right now. when another major car plant is on the market, we need to go after that
just because there aren't good options doesn't mean our government HAS to do something
Car plants? Louisiana already has better blue collar opportunities, which is one of the reasons that car plants don’t come here. Wages are actually too high if you can believe that. O&G/chemical pay too well

Obviously 65 > 35 but for the line of work they're describing. 65k yr is on the low end and below market for mid career professionals. My first 2 years out of school I working in Louisiana at what was a little under market nationally. I was able to catch on elsewhere after 2 years for close to a 40% raise. I said so long to LA. Over a decade later the total is around 150% increase.

But wouldn't having more entry level jobs encourage new companies to form (by former employees) or encourage other companies to relocate here and pick from the experienced work force? It's got to have some effect. And not everyone is willing to leave anyway.
I say this as someone who left Louisiana for greener pastures.

what?
are you arguing that our demographics aren't terrible?
how are we ever going to recruit legit businesses to LA with our schools and crime in Br/Nola? how can we compete with Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Nashville, Chatanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta, etc?
until we elevate those at the bottom, we will never be able to develop diversified industries b/c you can't polish a turd

we still have a mass of our population that is unemployed/underemployed and sucking off public assistance to survive. we need to get jobs for THOSE people or it's all just a show.

This is a step in elevating the bottom since these jobs overall are on the lower end of the spectrum for tech companies.
Sooooo do we say to this "ehhhhhh, we'll pass."??????? Because that is what it sound like.
Look, the educational system in Louisiana has been shite overall since before I was born. I can remember old timers back in the 1980's saying that the educational system had been shite overall since they were kids and they were in their 60's at the time.

two companies want to invest time and some money in making a go at NOLA for the tech game,we should stop pooh poohing ourselves and accept this as an opportunity. BTW Texas schools are not that great and neither are Tennessee's - I've lived in both states, better than Louisiana's overall, but not that great

I get what you are saying, but what do you suggest? More Vo-Tech training - I'm all for it? We already have a lot of skilled laborers)welder, pipefitter, instrumentation and machinist that are not working especially out in the oil patch. We've been trying to elevate the African American underclass for 50 years, they won't elevate themselves no matter what is presented to them and, for a lot of them, that try to get out, the entry wages don't make it worth their while in Louisiana so they could either leave or they can work in the black market economy (drugs, welfare fraud, etc)

Is this the thread where we laud 60K IT jobs and make fun of 100K operator jobs?

There are plenty of blue collar opportunities in Louisiana. Again, Louisiana can't attract things like car plants because the wages are already too good.
The reason that some people don't have jobs is because they have other issues - health, drugs, education, criminal record, motivation, kids, etc.
Louisiana truly lacks white collar jobs altogether. We have a decent pipeline of students, just no jobs in certain fields.

My guess is that you were not working for a "little" under market, in Louisiana, you were working very much under market rate......we don't like paying for things in Louisiana whether its the service, the product or the wage.

We can have both but we need people who understand IT as well as people who can work chemical plants

This.
And for all of you who think these jobs will only be filled by H1B's? Good luck finding those now...I know lots of people in IT HR, hiring is EXTREMELY TIGHT EVERYWHERE, even with H1B's.
But wait a min, don't we hear all the time about all the underemployed new college grads out there? Living with mom and dad? Some of whom could get into IT? My ex got IT 20 years ago w a Communications degree during the .com / Y2K boom and has done well.

No doubt that this announcement is not going to change the world, but some people are not going to be happy unless we get thousands of six figure incomes and eradicate poverty and educational gaps overnight. I mean, shite, this is good news for Louisiana. It's a sign of better things to come. Maybe. At least maybe.
The state has shitty infrastructure, schools, and massive crime problems too, but we can't just sit around and wait until those problems are fixed. You gotta push forward with what you have.
